ST. THOMAS, V.I. - Xavier was defeated 67-58 by Old Dominion in the championship game of the Paradise Jam. Xavier was led by Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons with 14 points each. Kenny Frease added 10 points and Jamel McLean finished with nine points and five boards.
Xavier faced an early 10-point deficit in the second half and twice cut the lead to five points. However, the Monarchs responded both times by extending their lead. At the 10:47 mark, Xavier found itself down by 12 points, the largest they had trailed by all evening. A McLean tip-in followed by a Holloway steal and lay-in kick-started the Musketeers.
Holloway drilled a three-pointer off of a Lyons assist in transition and Dante Jackson hit a turn-around jumper from the wing to cut the lead to three at 50-47. Holloway's three-pointer during the run gave him the record for most points scored in the Paradise Jam tournament.
Moments later, Holloway assisted on a Lyons three to tie the game at 52-all with 6:07 remaining in the game. The Monarchs reasserted themselves and went on a 10-2 run to lead by eight with 0:40 left in the contest. Old Dominion sealed the game by sinking several free throws down the stretch.
Old Dominion led 33-25 at the half. After trading a pair of baskets during the first two minutes of action, Xavier went on a 7-0 run over the next 6:13 to lead 11-4. With Xavier holding a 17-10 lead with 7: 14 left, the Monarchs went on runs of 6-0 and 10-0 sandwiched around a Lyons lay-in. Frease led all first half scorers with eight points. Jackson and Holloway had six points apiece in the opening frame.
Holloway, in the midst of earning first team honors for the tournament, broke several Paradise Jam Tournament records. In the three game tournament, Holloway eclipsed the previous record of 69 scored in 2001 by Eastern Michigan's Ricky Cottrill by scoring a total of 73 points. After just the second game of the tournament, Holloway surpassed the record for most free throws made (previously 19) by sinking 26. He finished the tournament with an astounding 33 made free throws.
Xavier men's basketball will be in action Saturday, November 27 when they face Wofford College at the Cintas Center at 6:30 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on FOX Sports Ohio.
