OXFORD, Ohio -- The Xavier men's basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start as the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks handed the Musketeers their second loss of the 2010-11 season, 75-64, at MU's Millett Hall. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 5-2 on the season while Miami improved to 3-4 on the season.
The Musketeers fell behind early and couldn't get over the hump as Miami hit 25-of-56 from the field for 44.6 percent shooting on the night. The Musketeers shot 42 percent from the field on the night including 51.9 percent in the second frame.
XU was led in scoring by junior guard Tu Holloway and red-shirt sophomore guard Mark Lyons with 18 points each. Holloway `s 18 points came on 5-of-13 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Lyons hit 4-of-11 from the field and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. Jamel McLean led the Musketeers and all players with 11 rebounds and junior Kenny Frease was second among all players with nine boards.
Miami was led by Julian Mavunga with 24 points on a 50 percent shooting performance from the field. Mavunga and Nick Winbush led Miami with eight rebounds each.
The Musketeers started the second half with an 11-6 run capped by a Danté Jackson 3-pointer at the 16:02 mark that cut the Miami lead to 32-30. MU answered with a 12-6 run of its own to take a 44-36 lead with 12:28 left in the game.
The RedHawks took an 11-point, 49-38, lead with 10:07 left in the game on an Allen Roberts jumper. Lyons cut the Miami lead to nine forty seconds later with a pair of free throws.
The RedHawks extended their lead to 59-46 on a Mavunga trey with just over six minutes left in the game.
Holloway's 3-pointer with 2:58 left in the game pulled the Musketeers to within four points, but it wasn't enough as MU was able to pull away for the win.
Miami held a 28-19 lead at halftime thanks to 11 points from Mavunga and an 11-of-26 shooting performance by the RedHawks. The Musketeers were led by Holloway with seven first half points on 2-of-6 shooting from the field. As a team, Xavier hit 7-of-23 field goals in the first frame.
Xavier got off to a slow start with its first field goal coming on a tip-in by McLean at the 15:59 mark in the first half. The Musketeers went 1-8 from the field in the first five minutes of action. The RedHawks, however, hit 4-of-8 from the field in the first seven minutes of action.
XU trailed 11-3 with 10:50 left in the first half but a 6-0 run capped by a Frease hook shot with just over nine minutes left pulled the Musketeers within two 11-9. The RedHawks managed to stop the XU run with a jumper by Mavunga at the 9:12 mark.
Xavier returns to action Thursday, December 9 as the Musketeers welcome national runner-up Butler to Cintas Center. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. and fans are encouraged to wear white as part of the "white-out" promotion.
