Game Notes
The Xavier Musketeers (8-3) placed five players in double-figure scoring to defeat the Albany Great Danes (7-7), 88-64. Mark Lyons paced the Musketeers with 18 points, all from three-point range. Kenny Frease added 17 points, Jamel McLean scored 15, Dante Jackson chipped in 14, and Tu Holloway scored 11. McLean grabbed 11 rebounds while Frease collected 9 boards. Tu Holloway dished out 9 assists. Albany was led by Tim Ambrose who scored 24 points, while Logan Aronhalt added 17 and Mike Black chipped in 11. Aronholt, Ambrose, and Blake Metcalf each grabbed 5 rebounds. Ambrose dished out 5 assists.
Xavier established season bests in field goal shooting and three-point shooting. The Musketeers shot 56.9 percent (33-for-58) from the field and 50 percent (14-for-28) from beyond the three-point arc. The previous season bests were 53.2 percent (25-for-47) field goal shooting, and 37.5 (6-for-16) from three-point range, both against Iowa at the Paradise Jam (11-19-10).
Xavier connected on a season-best 14 three-pointers tonight. The previous high was nine against Western Michigan (11-12-10). The 14 treys are the most since also hitting 14 against Fordham (2-14-09), and fell two short of the school record of 16, which was accomplished three times: at Auburn (1-6-08); against Virginia (1-3-08); and against Charlotte (2-3-07).
Xavier dished out a season-high 24 assists. The previous high was 22 against Wake Forest (12-18-10).
The 88 points scored by Xavier were the most in a game that finished in regulation this season. The previous high was 86 points against Iowa at the Paradise Jam (11-19-10). XU scored 94 points in its triple-overtime victory over Wofford (11-27-10).
Mark Lyons hit a career-high six three-pointers. His previous high was four against Saint Joseph's (2-17-10).
Jamel McLean recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. It was his ninth double-double as a Musketeer and the 11th of his collegiate career.
Jordan Latham scored the first points of his Musketeer career with a tip-in at 2:02 of the second half.
Griffin McKenzie scored the first points of his Xavier career with a 3-pointer at 1:34 of the second half.
Runs
Trailing 6-5 at 18:00, XU went on a 13-0 run to take an 18-6 lead at 15:32. Mark Lyons scored 6 points to lead the Musketeers.
Trailing 18-6 at 15:32, Albany went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 18-14 at 13:46. Logan Aronhalt scored 4 points during the stretch.
Leading 53-42 at 15:48, XU went on an 8-0 run to take a 61-42 lead at 13:47. Tu Holloway scored 6 points during the spurt.
Up Next: Xavier welcomes the Florida Gators to Cintas Center on Friday, December 31, for a 4:00 p.m. contest. XU lead the all-time series with the Gators, 2-0, including a 76-64 victory in Gainesville on February 13, 2010. In that contest, Xavier raced out to a 16-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half. The Gators cut the lead to 7 points by halftime, and used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to take a 49-47 lead. But XU countered with a 7-0 run just a few minutes later to take the lead for good. Jason Love scored 20 points and collected 10 rebounds to pace the Musketeers' inside attack. Jamel McLean scored 8 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Kenny Frease scored 12 points. From the perimeter, Jordan Crawford scored 18 points and Tu Holloway added 10 points. In the other contest between these two team, XU defeated Florida, 86-74, December 28, 1959, in Miami, Florida.
