Senior Chris Herrlinger extended the XU lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Chris Post in the No. 1 spot, but St. Bonaventure mounted a comeback and won the No. 2 and No. 3 matches.
However, Deye was able to earn a hard-fought win at No. 4 to seal the XU win.
"What a first day of play, said Xavier head coach Eric Toth. "Every quarter-final match was very tight. Ours was certainly no exception. Anytime you run into the Bonnies late in the season, especially at this tournament, you are in for one heck of a battle. Their kids competed exceptionally well tonight and could have easily advanced tonight. Our kids our equally tough as well. We played some of our best singles of the season tonight. Our doubles was pretty solid most of the evening until the very end when St. Bonaventure really picked up their intensity and execution to take the doubles point from us. This match will help us going into tomorrow's encounter with Duquesne. Beating such a good team tonight will give us the confidence that we are playing well and are in position to do it again tomorrow. It will be another great match."
With the win, the Musketeers advanced to Saturday's semi-finals, where they will face the No. 3 seed Duquesne. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
