CINCINNATI -- The Xavier men's tennis team protected its home court Wednesday afternoon as the Musketeers defeated Northern Kentucky 4-3. With the victory, the Musketeers improved to 13-7 on the season.
"NKU really played a good match today and competed better than us certainly at the top of the line-up," said men's assistant coach Rudy Vliegenberg. "Our depth ultimately was the difference. We've got a big one on Sunday, closing out our regular season against Duquesne. Duquesne is one of the hotter teams in the conference right now. We will have to compete and be at our absolute best to win and secure the seeding we have worked so hard all year for at next week's Atlantic 10 tournament."
The doubles point proved to be the deciding factor as Xavier took the second and third doubles matches and the doubles point.
JT Torbeck and Bobby Deye teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 2 and Marc Pretorius and Philip Diaz earned an 8-4 win in the third match.
XU and NKU split the singles matches with the Norse taking the first three singles points.
Deye earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tyler Fraser at No. 4 singles. Torbeck defeated Lee Lonergan 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 and Brandon MacDonald continued to have success at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
