League-Leading Charlotte Gets Past Baseball, 5-2

CINCINNATI - Visiting Charlotte scored two in the sixth and ninth innings to take an Atlantic 10 conference 5-2 win over Xavier baseball Friday afternoon at Hayden Field. With the win, Charlotte improves to 32-11 overall and a league-best 15-4 mark while Xavier slips to 17-30 on the season and 10-9 in conference action.
For the Musketeers, juniors John McCambridge and Phil Bauer each recorded two hits in the contest while four others got one hit apiece.
Charlotte struck first, putting up a single run in the third to take an early 1-0 lead. Bauer used a bases-loaded, two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to give XU its first lead of the contest, 2-1. With two runs in both the sixth and ninth, the 49ers sealed the win, taking the game, 5-2.
Junior Tommy Shirley (1-3) was charged with the loss after throwing seven innings for the Musketeers, fanning six while walking three. Redshirt freshman and junior Brian Muransky combined for the final three innings of the game.
Corey Roberts (4-2) was credited with the win for the Niners as he put in 6.2 innings of work, striking out seven against only one walk. Patrick Lawson picked up his seventh save after throwing the final two-thirds of the ninth.
Three Niners had multiple-hit games including designated hitter Mike Perkins who went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Musketeers and Niners return to action Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. start time at Hayden Field. Admission is free.
