BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After taking a 1-0 lead into the half, the Xavier men's soccer team held on to defeat No. 20/21 Indiana Sunday night, 2-1, in exhibition action at IU's Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers, seven-time national champions, played in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 last season. XU's game-winning goal was scored just over six and a half minutes into the second half.
"This was a wonderful team effort and I commend our guys for following the game plan and playing hard, playing smart and playing together against what I consider to be the model college soccer program," head coach Andy Fleming commented following the win.
Sophomore Luke Spencer found the back of the net twice for the Musketeers, connecting both times with senior El-Hadji Dieng. Sophomore Justin Marshall was credited with two saves on the night after spending the entire 90 minutes in the goal for the Musketeers.
"I'm especially happy for Luke who worked very hard on his finishing this summer and was able to finish off two chances," Fleming said. "Although only an exhibition game, tonight was a great moment for Xavier soccer and we hope to use this result to build some momentum as we continue on with our pre-season."
Indiana's lone goal was scored in the 85th minute by Daniel Kelly.
The Hoosiers out-shot the Musketeers, 12-6, but shots on goal were even at three apiece.
"We also had solid efforts from Adar Cohen, Justin Marshall, Andy Kaplan, Brandon Bucher and Ryan Gray," mentioned Fleming.
