Men Take Fourth at National Catholic Championships

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Xavier men's cross country team captured fourth place at the National Catholic Championships held at the Notre Dame Golf Course, while the women came in sixth place. The men finished with 91 points behind host Notre Dame, Marquette and Atlantic 10 foe Dayton. The women earned 199 points and ended up behind Notre Dame, Dayton, Marquette, DePaul, and Saint Louis.
Head Coach Dan Flaute was pleased by his team's performance. "The guys' and girls' race were two completely different races," Flaute commented. "The girls started out very strong, while the guys started out in the back. The guys closed out the last two miles strong to make up some time."
Senior Tommy Kauffmann had the best Musketeer finish, crossing in fourth place with a time of 24:50. Junior Keith Albrektson ran a personal-best time with a 25:30 to earn 15th place. Albrektson was in 30th place, but make a kick in the last couple miles to move up 15 places. Former A-10 Rookie of the Week Tom Ohlman was the third fastest freshman in the field and the third finisher for X with a personal-best time of 25:34 to come in 17th place. Ohlman beat his personal-best set earlier this season at the Duquesne Duals by 18 seconds. Sophomore Hank Geer finished his race in 25:48 to earn 24th place. Junior Ben Foley was the last scorer for the Muskteers, placing 33rd off a 26:02 time. Senior Joe Ryan ran a personal-best time beating his record by 19 seconds with a time of 26:49.
Senior Caitlin Thomas was the first to cross for the women, running in 18:43 to earn 31st place. Junior Caylin Howell was right behind her teammate to finish in 32nd place with a time of 18:48. Sophomore Rachel Clark was the third finisher for X, earning a 40th place finish off a personal-best tying 18:56 effort. Rookie Ashley Vincent was the seventh fastest freshman in the field with a time of 18:58 to get 42nd place. The fifth finisher for the Musketeers was sophomore Kaitlin Price whose time of 19:18 was good for 64th place.
Several Muskteers participated in the JV races. Freshman Nick Kobunski was the top Xavier finisher, placing 21st with a time of 27:27. Junior Samantha Milroy was the top XU finisher, coming in 21st place with a time of 20:08.
