CINCINNATI Despite strong performances from sophomore Katie Pleiman and freshman Andrea Wolf in singles play, the Musketeers couldn't overcome an early deficit and fell to Rutgers 5-2 Sunday. With the loss, XU fell to 4-6 on the season while the Scarlet Knights improved to 5-2.
"Today we had a good look at a victory against a quality team but, unfortunately, didn't get the job done,"said XU head coach Eric Toth. "Rutgers just did a better job as a whole competing in the match's defining moments. I know our girls are disappointed in today's outcome. I know that they will continue to work hard in practice to improve on what needs to be corrected, to become a better team, and win these close matches which we will certainly encounter again."
Pleiman earned a 6-3, 6-2 win in the top singles spot over Amy Zhang. Wolf rounded out the XU singles wins when she defeated Morgan Ivey (6-2, 6-1) at No. 3.
The Musketeers will return to action March 8 as they face UT-Arlington in the first of two matches in the Lone Star State.
