URI Tops Baseball Musketeers Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Xavier baseball team dropped an 8-4 decision to Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island in a non-conference matchup at the Cougar Classic Saturday afternoon. With the loss, XU fell to 1-4 while URI improved to 3-2 on the season.
Rhode Island scored in all but three innings and starter Kevin Lee pitched five and a third innings to earn the win.
XU starter Jon Richard fell to 1-1 on the season as he was pegged with the loss in five innings of action. Daniel Rod led the Musketeers offensively as he went 1-for-4 at the plate with a run and an RBI.
Xavier scored thrice in the bottom of the sixth. Rod scored on a walk for the Musketeers' first run of the game. Mitch Elliott scored on an RBI sac fly by Patrick Paligraf, and Vinny Nittoli crossed the plate on an RBI base hit by Tres Eberhardt that cut the Rams' lead to 6-3.
URI managed to score twice more and hold off XU for the win. Xavier faces College of Charleston Sunday at 3 p.m.
