Balanced Offense Leads to 89-52 Win Over Lady Lions

The Lady Lions (0-2) took an early 6-4 advantage to open the contest before the Musketeers (2-0) went on a 21-9 run to take their first double-figure lead of the game, 25-15, at the 6:05 mark. UAPB got within four (30-26) with just under three minutes remaining in the first stanza before Maleeka Kynard scored the final two baskets of the half to give Xavier a 34-26 halftime lead.
Xavier outscored UAPB 23-10 in the first nine minutes of the second half to build a 21-point lead (57-36). The Musketeers hit 55.2 percent of their shots from the floor in the second half and led by as many as 40 points in the closing seconds of the contest.
Leah Schaefer scored a game-high 13 points for Xavier, going 5-for-7 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the foul line. The sophomore forward also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds as the Musketeers outrebounded the Lady Lions, 50-30, on the night.
Briana Glover added 12 points while Kynard finished the night with 11 points. Raeshaun Gaffney and Marquia Turner completed the double-figure scorers with 10 points each. All told, Xavier had 11 players score in the game and 12 players grab a rebound.
Xavier went 31-for-36 from the foul line, led by Anniina Äijänen who went 7-for-8. The 31 made free throws ranks fifth in single-game school history.
The Musketeers went 27-for-58 from the floor and scored 22 points off of 18 Lady Lion turnovers. Xavier also added 42 bench points in the victory.
Shami Goodman led UAPB with a team-high 12 points and five rebounds. Charisse Carr was the only other player in double figures with 11 points. Xavier returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 20 against Virginia at 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
