Defense Leads Xavier to 62-38 Win over Lipscomb

​CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball held Lipscomb to a .283 field-goal percentage on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Lady Bisons, 62-38, at Cintas Center. The Musketeers improve to 8-3 on the year while Lipscomb falls to 4-7.
Briana Glover hit a baseline jumper on Xavier's first possession of the game to give the Musketeers a 2-0 advantage before the Lady Bisons scored nine unanswered points to take their largest lead of the half, 9-2, at the 15:13 mark. Xavier battled back over the next six minutes to tie the game for the first time, 17-17.
A Kindell Fincher three pointer on the following play regained the lead for Xavier and started a 6-0 run for the Musketeers. XU outscored Lipscomb, 18-7, over the final nine minutes of the first half to take a 35-24 advantage into the locker room.
The Musketeers defense limited the Lady Bisons to only two points over the first 13 minutes of the second period, eventually leading to Xavier posting its largest lead of the game, 54-26, with 6:46 left in regulation. XU limited Lipscomb to a .214 field-goal percentage in the second half and only 14 points.
Maddison Blackwell and Glover led 12 XU players who scored in the game with 11 points each. Fincher added eight points and Aliyah Zantt chipped in seven. Blackwell also had a team-high four assists as the Musketeers recorded 16 in the contest.
Xavier won the battle on the glass, 40-38, led by Leah Schaefer and Anniina Äijänen who both had six rebounds. Five other Musketeers had four rebounds in the win.
Chandler Cooper led the Lady Bisons with 10 points on 3-for-9 shooting. Ashley Southern pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
XU forced 13 steals in the game, converting the miscues into 22 points. The Musketeers also outscored Lipscomb in bench points, 39-17.
The Musketeers return to action on Monday, Dec. 22 at Kennesaw State. Tip-off is slated for 12 p.m.
