Women’s Soccer Tops Seton Hall in BIG EAST Play
10.11.15 | Women's Soccer
CINCINNATI - Kenadie Carlson's sixth goal of the season gave Xavier women's soccer its first conference win as the Musketeers topped Seton Hall, 1-0, on Sunday at the XU Soccer Complex.
Midway through the first period, freshman Samantha Dewey fed the ball from midfield to Maddie Tierney on the right side. Tierney centered the ball for Carlson who played the ball ahead into the box and finished to left side of the net to give the Musketeers their first goal in conference play.
Carlson's six goals lead the Musketeers for the season. Tierney and Dewey were credited with the assists, the fourth of the year for Tierney, and the team-high sixth of the year for Dewey.
Xavier's offense controlled the ball for much of the first half, out-shooting the Pirates, 9-3, before the break, including three first half shots from Dewey, including two on-goal. The Musketeers held to Pirates to just two dangerous chances before the break, and held SHU's leading scorer Amanda Gulli without an attempt on the goal for the first 45 minutes.
"I thought we were very good in the first half," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "The second half we had to absorb a lot with Seton Hall throwing numbers forward. "
Seton Hall came out in the second half with increase pressure on offense. The Pirates, playing down a player due to a red card, more than doubled their shot attempts in the second period. SHU's Gulli led the Pirate's attack with three shots, two on-goal, but goalkeeper Rachel Piccus collected eight saves to keep the Musketeers ahead, 1-0.
"We should have ended the game with a second goal several times in the second half but give Seton Hall credit they battled to keep it close and at times outplayed us in the second half," said Sherwood. " Our kids have deserved some points in conference now for a few games it was good to finally see us get them."
Dewey finished with a team-high five shots for the game as the Musketeers outshot the Pirates 13-11 for the game. Piccus picked up a sixth win for the season. The Musketeers have doubled their win total from 2014.
Xavier heads out for a three-game road stretch, starting with a trip to Georgetown, rescheduled from Oct. 4, on Wednesday, Oct. 14 with a noon first touch. The game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network and live stats will be available through GoXavier.com.
