
Swimming Opened Weekend at Cincinnati with Cleveland State

Musketeers travel to Miami on Saturday
CINCINNATI – The Xavier swimming program opened a busy weekend by traveling across town to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats, as well as Cleveland State. A number of Musketeers posted strong performances in the first of two meets this weekend.
The Musketeer women opened the meet by taking third in the 200 medley relay with Paxtyn Drew, Haley Dresner, Annie Cummins and Claire Brolsma posting a time of 1:49.55
To open individual events, Mackenna Rife posted a time of 10:39.08 to take third in the 1,000 free. Rife collected another top-three finish in the 500 free, posting a time of 5:08.68 to take second. Freshman Katie Kerr followed Rife in, upping her 16th fastest time in XU history to 5:11.05 to take fifth.
In the freestyle sprints, Claire Brolsma led the way, taking second in the 50 free with a time of 24.66.
In the 100 back, freshman Caroline Gaertner led the Musketeers with a second place finish with a time of 58.43. Sophomore Paxtyn Drew followed her in with a time of 59.17 to take fourth. Laura Dicus also posted a top-20 time in the 100 back, coming in at 19th fastest with a time of 1:00.39 to finish sixth.
Drew led the way for Xavier in the 200 back, taking second with a time of 2:06.99. Gaertner touched the wall in 2:08.23 to take third and up her 14th fastest time in Xavier records.
In the 100 fly, Annie Cummins upper her Xavier best time from 16th to 11th with a time of 58.87, good for fourth place.
In the 200 fly, Maggie Kauffeld moved up to 15th in XU history with a time of 2:11.86. Jenna Wilkes entered school records for the event at 20th with a time of 2:12.82.
The Musketeer women closed the event with by taking the top spot in the 200 free relay. Brolsma, Drew, Molly Ford and Dicus posted a time of 1:39.16 to take first.
The Musketeer men opened the meet in the same manner as the women, taking third in the 200 medley relay with Erik Biernat, Michael Pettinichi, Tony Miller and Luke Johanns posting a time of 1:34.42.
Nick Strader opened the individual events for the men by taking third in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:00.52. Alex Wolfred collected a pair of third place finishes in the 200 free (1:44.55) and the 500 free (4:41.58).
In the freestyle sprints, Luke Johanns took home the top spot in the 50 yard free, posting a time of 20.79. Johanns also grabbed a top three finish in the 100 free, finishing third with a time of 46.96, coming in just behind second place Rodrigo Suriano's time of 46.44
In the 100 back, Erik Biernat entered the Xavier records with the 18th fastest time in school history, touching the wall in 53.53.
In the 100 breaststroke, Michael Pettinichi used a time of 58.83 to enter Xavier's records at 14th fastest. Pettinichi also moved up to the 17th fastest in the 200 breast with at time 2:11.24, coming in just behind Robert Van Kirk who posted a time of 2:11.13.
Like the women the men closed out the event with a first place finish. Luke Johanns, Suriano, Enrique Hernandez and Miller posted a time of 1:23.67 to take the top spot in the 200 free relay.
Xavier returns to action tomorrow with a trip to Miami at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. Events are set to begin at 2:00 p.m. Stay tuned to GoXavier.com for results.
