Massa’s Career High Hitting Percentage Leads Musketeers Past Georgetown

The team hit a season-high .477 hitting percentage.
CINCINNATI – Sophomore Kristen Massa led the Musketeers with .762 hitting percentage with 16 kills on 21 attempts and no errors to lift Xavier past Georgetown in four sets (23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18) at Cintas Center Friday afternoon. Massa's hitting percentage was the second highest single-match percentage in school history.
In addition to Massa's career-high hitting percentage, the team hit a season-high .477 on 128 attempts with only seven errors. Five Musketeers hit above .450 for the match.
With the Musketeers minimizing their attacking errors, Abbey Bessler had a match-high 21 kills with only one error on 39 attempts and 16 digs to record a double-double.
Sofia Peterson added 12 kills to the match, while Brooke Betts put up a .778 hitting percentage hitting percentage with seven kills on nine attempts.
After losing the first set, the Musketeers fought off 11 ties and three lead changes to win the second set with Bessler leading the offense with seven kills.
Xavier controlled set three from start to finish. The team opened up with a 15-4 run that included 10 kills and no attacking errors. The trend continued through the rest of the set. The team finished the set with 18 kills and no attacking errors.
The fourth and final set was tied until 6-6 until the Musketeers began to separate themselves from the Hoyas behind a balanced offence to win the set and match. In the set Xavier had only one attack error with 15 kills on 25 attempts.
McKena Estes and Mackenzi Humm had 29 and 28 assists, respectively.
Meredith Klare had 19 digs and seven assists on the afternoon.
The Musketeers are back in action Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. against conference leader Creighton.
Saturday will also serve as 'Girl Scout Day' and 'Junior Musketeer Day'. All Girl Scouts in attendance with receive an 'X' patch, while the first 100 kids receive a drawstring bag. Prior to the match, kids will have the opportunity to make posters with the Blue Blob and XU Cheerleaders.
At the conclusion of the match, the entire XU volleyball team will be available to sign posters for fans.
XU students in attendance will receive an invitation to a pizza party with the team that will be held on Oct. 20.
