Bessler Leads Musketeers to Three Set Win Over Butler

Junior outside hitter had a match-high 19 kills on Saturday
CINCINNATI - Junior Abbey Bessler posted a match-high 19 kills, including five of Xavier's final eight points, as the Musketeers topped Butler in three sets (25-20, 25-13, 26-24) on Saturday afternoon at Cintas Center.

Xavier improved to 11-10 (7-3 BIG EAST), while Butler dropped to 7-16 (3-7 BIG EAST).

Trailing 20-18 in set three, the Musketeers went on a 5-2 run to take their first lead of the set, 23-22. The two teams were tied two more times in the stanza before an attacking error by Butler gave Xavier the 26-24 victory. Bessler had five kills down the stretch to seal the win.

Butler led 12-10 early in set one before the Musketeers used a 7-1 run to take a 17-13 advantage they would never relinquish. XU pulled away down the stretch, posting a 25-20 victory with back-to-back kills from Brooke Betts and Bessler to seal the win. Bessler had eight kills in the opening set.

Xavier led 13-11 midway through set two before scoring nine straight points to take a an 11-point advantage. The Musketeers secured the 25-13 victory on a Sofia Peterson kill. Kristen Massa also had five of her eight kills in the second stanza.Â

Massa added a team-high .462 hitting percentage in the win to go along with three blocks. Peterson finished the match with seven kills.

Mackenzi Humm dished out a match-high 22 assists, while McKena Estes added 14. Both squads had five service aces with Laruen Frilling pacing XU with two.

Defensively, Meredith Klare had a match-high 12 digs, while Bessler had nine. Both teams had five blocks on the afternoon.

Anna Logan had a team-high nine kills for Butler and Aki Aitsebaomo posted a team-high 11 digs. XU limited the Bulldogs to a .052 hitting percentage.

Xavier returns to action on Friday, Oct. 30 at St. John's. First service is slated for 7 p.m.
