Musketeers pick up third BIG EAST win, most in program history
CINCINNATI – The Xavier women's soccer team closed out its home schedule by sending the 2015 seniors out with the most convincing BIG EAST win in program history, topping Creighton, 3-0. The win moves the Musketeers to 8-8-1 and marks the third win conference play, the most in the three years Xavier has competed in the BIG EAST.
The Musketeers got what would eventually be the game-winner early in the match, after Samantha Dewey played the ball ahead to Carlson on a breakaway in the 20th minute. Carlson finished from the center of the 18-yard box for her seventh goal of the season. Dewey picked up her seventh assist on the play.
Xavier held the 1-0 lead going into the second half. Shortly after the break, Dewey played the ball ahead to Danielle Dixson on the far side of the box. Dixson crossed to Skylar Groth at the top of the 18-yard box. Groth shot a rainbow shot over the goalkeepers head, sneaking just on the crossbar for her second goal of the season, setting the score at 2-0 in favor of the Musketeers in the 50th minute.
Less than five minutes later Groth challenged the Creighton keeper in the 18-yard box, sneaking the ball behind her for Dewey to finish, putting the Musketeers up 3-0. The goal marked Dewey's seventh of the season.
"Certainly, scoring three goals in a BIG EAST game is huge accomplishment for anybody in this conference," said head coach Woody Sherwood after the game. "Give Creighton credit, they were really dangerous at times."
The Bluejays finished with 20 shots to the Musketeers' eight, with CU leading scorer Lauren Sullivan leading with six attempts, including two on-goal. The Xavier backline of Maria Libertin, Courtney Kobashigawa and Carly Alfano played all 90 minutes and goalkeeper Rachel Piccus collected nine saves to collect the Musketeers' eighth shutout of the season.
"I was a little disappointed with how flat we came out," said Sherwood. "I think that was directly related to a very emotional senior day in the locker room where they expended a lot of energy. We definitely need to tighten things up in the back going into this last game against Butler."
Xavier closes out the season on Friday, Oct. 30 when the Musketeers travel to Indianapolis to face the Butler Bulldogs. The match is set for a 7:05 first touch on the BIG EAST Digital Network and links to lvie stats will be available on GoXavier.com.
