Musketeers finish tied for 11th, Montaño ties for 14th at shortened event
COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – Xavier men's golf finished tied for 11th after weather got in the way of the final round of The Grove Intercollegiate on Tuesday. Yesterday's 36-hole results became final due to the cancellation.
Sophomore Jose Montaño had rocketed up the leaderboard on day two, climbing 26 spots to a tie for 14th. He finishes in that spot after firing a 1-under score of 71 in the second round.Â
The Musketeers shook off a rough start to combine for a 303 (+15) on day two, trimming 12 strokes from the opening round and moving into a tie for 11th overall with Southern Mississippi at 42-over. Kentucky ended up on top of the field with a 5-over finish, while Lipscomb (+14) and Middle Tennessee State (+17) rounded out the top three.Â
After a 6-over first round, Montaño turned in a 71 to move from a tie for 40th all the way up to a tie for 14th. He finished just four strokes outside the top-five.
Four other Musketeers lowered their scores on day two and three took spots in the top-50.
Freshman Daniel Wetterich shot a 75 (+3) to climb eight spots into a tie for 42nd, while David Long checked in with a 76 (+4) to tie for 45th at 11-over.Â
Matt Gerard also moved up seven spots with a 4-over day and rounded out the scoring for the Musketeers.
