Sumner’s 19 points leads Musketeers in 81-72 win over Miami

CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's basketball team used a late 10-0 run to put Miami away, taking the 81-72 win to open the 2015-16 season. The win, in front of a 10,372 fans at Cintas Center, marks Xavier's 16th straight in season openers.
Edmond Sumner led the Musketeers with 19 points after scoring a total of eight points through six games in the 2014-15 season before taking a medical redshirt. Jalen Reynolds finished with his fourth career double-double, grabbing 15 rebounds and scoring 16, including going 6-of-7 from the free throw line. J.P. Macura scored 17 and Trevon Bluiett added 10 for the Musketeers.
After Xavier jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first three minutes of the game, the RedHawks chipped away at the Musketeer advantage until Miami took its first lead of the game, 18-17, with 11 minutes remaining before the half.
Xavier answered with a 9-2 run, taking as much as a seven point lead before going into the half with a 45-40 advantage. Reynolds and Marcura led Xavier with 10 first half points each, and Reynolds grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Musketeers as they out-rebounded Miami, 26-12, before the break.
Xavier opened the second half on a 12-3 run to take its largest lead of the game at 14 less than four minutes into the half, forcing Miami to take a timeout with the Musketeers leading, 57-43.
Miami used a 11-0 run, sparked by five points from Geovonie McKight, to climb back into the game, holding Xavier scoreless for over seven minute to cut the Musketeer advantage down to one, 61-60, with less than seven minutes remaining in the game.
A dunk from Reynolds sparked a 10-0 run from the Musketeers that featured five straight points from Macura and was capped by a three from Bluiett to put Xavier firmly in control, 71-60, with less than three minutes to play.
Miami's Eric Washington scored nine points in the final three minutes, but the RedHawks would get no closer than seven before the Musketeers sealed the 81-72 win with a pair of free throws from Macura, who finished 7-of-7 from the line.
Reynolds' 15 rebounds marked a game high and led the Musketeers as they out-rebounded the RedHawks, 42-25, including grabbing 18 offensive boards to just seven for Miami. Reynolds also finished with a game-high four blocks and his three assists matched Blueitt, Remy Abell and Myles Davis to lead the Musketeers.
MU's Washington finished with 19 points to match Sumner for game-high and dished out a game-high seven assists.
