Musketeers Top Golden Eagles on Senior Day

Abbey Bessler leads Xavier with 20 kills and 20 digs
CINCINNATI – Junior Abbey Bessler led the Musketeers with 20 kills and 20 digs as Xavier volleyball defeated Marquette in four sets (32-30, 25-22, 19-25, 25-19) on Saturday night. Xavier has now won eight of its last nine matches.
Xavier ended regular-season action with an 18-11 (14-4 BIG EAST) record. The Musketeers will be the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and take on No. 2 seed Villanova in the opening round on Nov. 27 in Omaha, Neb.
Kristen Massa added 16 kills in the win, while Makayla Agin chipped in nine. Lauren Frilling added eight kills with a .500 hitting percentage.
Mackenzi Humm dished out a team-high 27 assists to go along with a team-high 21 digs, a career high for the sophomore setter. McKena Estes added 23 assists in the win.
The Golden Eagles (21-10, 12-6 BIG) led 23-18 in the opening set before the Musketeers used a 6-1 run to tie the set at 24 - the 12th tie of the stanza. Tied at 30, Bessler posted a kill before a Marquette hitting error made the score, 32-30.
The second set had four ties and two lead changes with the final tie at 18. Xavier used a 6-1 run to match its largest lead of the set, 24-19, before holding on for the 25-22 victory. Bessler hit .385 in the set with six kills.
Marquette never trailed in the third stanza and led by as many as six, 17-11, late in the set. Xavier battled back to get within two, 19-17, before the Golden Eagles finished the set on a 6-2 run - winning the set, 25-19.
Xavier jumped out to a 15-4 advantage in the fourth set. Marquette fought back, but the early deficit was too much to overcome as the Musketeers won the set, 25-19.
Taylor Louis led the Golden Eagles with 17 kills, while Joy Miley added 13. Sara Blasier had a match-high 41 assists in the loss.
Saturday's match served as 'Senior Day' for Agin and Lauren Metzger. The two players have now helped the Musketeers record 79 wins during their careers.
