Xavier Tops Cincinnati to Match Best Start in School History

Davis' 17 leads Musketeers in front of record crowd at Cintas Center
CINCINNATI – The Xavier Musketeers never trailed on the way to a 65-55 win over Cincinnati in the 2015-16 Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout in front of a Cintas Center-record crowd of 10,617 on Saturday. Myles Davis scored a season-high 17 points to lead the Musketeers as they moved to 10-0 on the season, matching the 1996-97 team for best start in school history. Xavier's 10-game win streak is the longest since an 11-game win streak during the 2008-09 season.
Davis' game-high 17 points came on 70 percent shooting from the floor, including going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Edmond Sumner also finished in double figures. Remy Abell and James Farr added nine each, with Farr going a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor.
Xavier took control of the game quickly, jumping out to a 10-1 lead, while holding Cincinnati without a field goal until the 14:53 mark.
The Musketeers hit three of its first four shots from outside the arc to build the lead out to 12, 18-6, with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
Cincinnati responded with a 7-2 run to climb within seven before back-to-back baskets from Davis sparked an 8-2 run to extend the lead out to 13, 28-15, with just under seven minutes remaining in the half.
The Bearcats climbed to within nine before a 9-0 run gave Xavier its largest lead of game at 18, 39-21, going into the final minute of the half. Cincinnati scored five straight before a Davis three at the buzzer gave the Musketeers the 42-26 lead going into the half.
The three at the buzzer brought Davis' first half point total to a game-high 10 for the first half on 80 percent shooting from the floor, including going 2-of-2 from beyond the arc.
Xavier finished the half shooting 50 percent from the floor, including going 4-of-8 on threes.
Farr also grabbed four rebounds to match Trevon Bluiett for team-high as the Musketeers outrebounded the Bearcats, 20-12, in the first half. Xavier grabbed eight offensive rebounds to just two for Cincinnati to out-score the UC 10-0 on second chance points.
Xavier turned eight UC turnovers into 13 points while the Bearcats were only able to force four turnovers for two points in the first half.
Cincinnati opened the second half with a 10-0 run to climb to within six, 42-36, less than three minutes into the half.
The Bearcats would get as close as five, 52-47, with 10 minutes to play before the Musketeers used a 6-0 run to take a double-digit advantage into the final seven minutes of the game.
UC would get as close as seven before a 7-0 run gave Xavier a 14 point lead with a minute to play. Four late points from the Bearcats set the final score at 65-55 in favor of the Musketeers.
After the Musketeers dominated the offensive glass in the first half, Cincinnati turned the tables to help climb back into the game, grabbing 20 rebounds in the second half, including nine off the offensive glass, to finish the game in a 32-32 draw on the boards overall. UC finished with the 11-10 advantage on offensive boards, but the Musketeers capitalized off its offensive rebounding, finishing with a 14-8 advantage on second chance points.
Jalen Reynolds, Bluiett and Farr each grabbed six boards to lead Xavier.
Xavier returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 12 when the Musketeers host Auburn. The matchup with the Tigers is set for a noon tip on FOX Sports 1.
