Xavier Picks Up 68-57 Road Win at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Xavier women's basketball used a late 12-0 run to pull away from Providence, 68-57, on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
With the game tied 53-53 with 5:08 left in regulation, the Musketeers (13-9, 5-6 BIG EAST) scored 12 unanswered points to take their first double-figure lead of the game, 65-53. Maleeka Kynard scored eight points during the stretch, including six free throws. Defensively, Xavier held the Friars (5-17, 2-9 BIG EAST) to only two made baskets over the final five minutes of play.
Xavier hit five of its first nine shot attempts of the game to take its largest lead of the half, 12-4, with 14:13 on the clock. The Musketeers led 23-19 at the 4:36 mark before the Friars used an 8-3 run, with seven points from Allegra Botteghi, to take their first lead of the afternoon, 27-26.
Providence closed the period with three straight points to take a 30-26 advantage into the locker room. XU led for 15:29 in the first half, but was held scoreless over the final three minutes of play.
Erica Dawson led eight XU players who scored in the first half with eight points in nine minutes off the bench, while Alison Lewis paced the Friars with eight points. Providence held a 19-16 advantage on the glass at the break.
The Friars opened the second stanza with back-to-back baskets to take their largest lead of the game, 34-26, before the Musketeers knocked down four of their next six shots to regain the lead, 38-36, with 14:49 on the clock. XU did not trail for the rest of the contest, but the Friars kept it close as the contest had four more ties over the next nine minutes of play until the final tie at 53.
Xavier outscored Providence, 42-27, in the second period and went 12-of-15 from the charity stripe after only attempting four free throws in the first half. XU finished the day 14-of-19 from the foul line.
Kynard finished with a career-high 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting, with 12 points in the second half. The senior guard added six rebounds and a team-high five assists and four steals.
Briana Glover scored 15 of her 18 points in the second half, finishing the day 6-of-9 from the floor. Dawson rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points and a team-high three 3-pointers.
Xavier won the battle on the glass, 36-35, with Kynard and Aliyah Zantt leading the squad with six rebounds each. Chanise Baldwin led the Friars with a game-high eight rebounds.
Lewis led Providence with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while Botteghi finished with nine.
Xavier forced 18 turnovers in the win, converting the miscues into 22 points. The Musketeers also had eight more second-chance points, 16-8, than the Friars.
The Musketeers return to action on Feb. 6 against Marquette. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
