Musketeers Fall in Extra Innings in Series Opener at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS - Xavier baseball dropped its series opener at Tulane on Friday night, 3-2, in 10 innings at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The Musketeers fall to 4-12 on the season.
Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Tulane's Tim Yandel stepped to the plate to pinch hit for Nico Symington. The junior delivered a two-out RBI double on the first pitch he saw to score Stephen Alemais for the game-winning run. The Green Wave improved to 13-5 on the year.
The Musketeers got on the scoreboard in the first frame as Brian Bruening made the score 1-0, hitting a one-out RBI double to right center field to score David Morton.
Xavier added its second run of the game in the sixth inning on a one-out Andre Jernigan RBI single to left field to score Derek Hasenbeck from third base.
In the seventh inning, the Green Wave tied the game at 2-2 on a two-out, two-RBI single by John Gandolfo.
Brad Kirschner, making his fifth start of the year, threw a career-high nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings of action. The Russellville, Ohio native surrendered four hits and two runs, while issuing two walks.
Zac Lowther (0-1) took the loss for Xavier, surrendering three hits and one run in three innings of work. The freshman pitcher also threw five strikeouts and issued one walk.
Ian Gibaut (4-1) eared the win for the Green Wave, throwing five strikeouts in the final 2.1 innings. The junior did not allow any hits or runs and issued one walk. Corey Merrill started the contest and went seven innings with seven strikeouts, while allowing seven hits and two runs (one earned).
Morton paced the Xavier offense as he was 2-for-5 at the plate with a run scored. Alemais and Jake Willsey both led the Green Wave with two hits and a run each.
Both squads collected seven hits in the contest. Xavier left one more runner on base (9-8) than Tulane and committed one less error (2-1).
Game two of the weekend series is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 14.
