NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Brian Bruening tied the game with a sixth inning home run, but Lipscomb would score three unanswered in two trips to the plate to come away with a 5-2 win on Friday at Dugan Field.
Xavier drops to 6-15, snapping a two-game win streak, while Lipscomb improves to 12-6 overall.
Bruening's homer, a two-run shot to right field, was his first of the season and fifth of his career. Joe Forney scored on the blast, following a two-out single.
Andre Jernigan (3-for-4), Ethan Schmidt (2-for-3) and Bruening (2-for-4) all had multi-hit nights for the Musketeers, but Xavier stranded six runners and went 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
Brad Kirschner (2-3) was effective, getting the start and lasting six innings. The sophomore lefty allowed just two earned runs, striking out five before exiting in the seventh with two on and no outs.
Ian Martinez-McGraw (4-1) picked up the win for Lipscomb, tossing seven innings of two-run ball and striking out four. Jason Ziegler was lights out in relief, fanning five of the six batters he faced to earn the save.
Game two of the series is set for 3:00 p.m. ET. Adam Hall will face Bison starter Nick Andros.
