Xavier Falls to Siena in WBI Quarterfinals

CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball couldn't overcome a fast second-half start by Siena as the Musketeers were defeated, 69-49, in the Women's Basketball Invitational Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center.
The Saints (21-12) scored 15 unanswered points to open the second period and take a 20-point advantage, 42-22, with 16:19 left in the game. The Musketeers (18-15) got within 16 four times down stretch, but the Saints held onto their double-figure lead behind a .517 second-half field goal percentage.
Siena finished the contest hitting 49.1 percent (26-for-53) of its shot attempts, while the Musketeers were held to a .286 clip - its second lowest percentage on the year. Xavier was 18-of-25 from the foul line, while Siena was 11-of-16.
Jenna Crittendon led the Musketeers with a team-high nine points and five rebounds. The junior forward also dished out a team-high three assists. Aliyah Zantt and Kindell Fincher both added seven points.
Siena won the battle on the glass, 44-26, with Ida Krogh pulling down a game-high nine rebounds for the Saints. Symone Kelly chipped in eight rebounds. The Saints scored 16 second-chance points on 12 offensive rebounds, while Xavier was limited to two second-chance points.
Five Siena players scored in double figures, led by Meghan Donohue and Tehresa Coles who both had 13 points. Krogh added a game-high five assists.
Xavier forced 21 turnovers in the contest, turning the miscues into 16 points. The Musketeers also recorded 11 steals on the day, paced by Zantt's game-high five steals.
Siena hit five of its first six shot attempts to take an early 12-8 lead. Xavier used a 7-3 run to tie the game at 15 with 8:15 left in the first period before the Saints scored six unanswered points to regain the lead. Siena led 27-22 at the break.
Xavier moved to 12-15 all-time in postseason play following the WBI loss to Siena.
NOTES: Xavier posted 10 more wins than a year ago, ranking tied for ninth in the nation in win improvement at the NCAA Division I level... the Musketeers only lose one senior, Maleekya Kynard, and return four starters for next season... Xavier finished the year hitting 71 percent of its free throws to rank sixth in single-season school history... the 454 made free throws ranks fifth in single-season school history... the Musketeers also finished the year with 267 steals to rank ninth in single-season school history.
