Musketeers Top Bobcats, 9-5, in Midweek Action

ATHENS, Ohio - A balanced offense at the plate led to the Xavier baseball team defeating Ohio, 9-5, in midweek action on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Wren Stadium.
Five Musketeers (8-16) had multi-hit performances, led by Nate Soria who went 3-for-6 at the plate with three runs and three RBI. Brian Bruening (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Joe Forney (2-for-5, R) Andre Jernigan (3-for-5, R, 2 RBI) and Derek Hasenbeck (2-for-4, 2R) also added multi-hit days as the Musketeers recorded 15 hits.
Xavier scored six unanswered runs to start the game, including four in the first two frames, before the Bobcats (12-9) scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to get within four (6-2).
A Bruening RBI single to right field in the top of the first inning scored the first run before the Musketeers added three runs in the following inning on a two-out, three-run homer by Soria. XU added two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 6-0.
Both teams scored three runs over the last five innings of play to make the final score, 9-5.
Xavier posted five more hits (15-10) than Ohio and committed two more errors (3-1). The Bobcats also left two more runners on base (12-10).
Eric Stiene started the game for Xavier on the mound, striking out two and allowing five hits and two runs in four innings of action. Zach Johnson (1-1) was one of three relievers used on the afternoon as the senior picked up his first career win. He recorded three strikeouts in 2.2 innings and surrendered only two hits and one unearned run.
Jake Rudnicki (1-2) took the loss for the Bobcats as the sophomore allowed 10 hits and six runs in 3.2 innings. All told, Ohio used five pitchers who combined to record six strikeouts and issue four walks.
Manny DeJesus led the Bobcats at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run. Tyler Wells also went 2-for-5 with two RBI and run.
The Musketeers return to action on Friday, March 27 at 3 p.m. against Northern Kentucky. Friday's contest will be the team's first game at Hayden Field this season.
