Allon, Groth First Half Goals Lead Musketeers to 2-0 Win Over Toledo
08.28.15 | Women's Soccer
CINCINNATI – Catherine Allon's second goal of her senior season proved to be a game-winner on Friday night, as the Musketeers topped Toledo, 2-0, at the XU Soccer Complex. The Musketeers moved to 2-1-0 on the season after taking the home opener.
Allon's goal came after Samantha Dewey fed the ball to Andie Kennard who placed the ball in front of the net for the senior midfielder. Allon found the lower left corner of the net to give the Musketeers the 1-0 lead with less than eight minutes gone from the match. Allon now matches Tori Doss for a team-high two goals on the season.
The Musketeers would add to the lead before the break, taking a 2-0 lead on sophomore Skylar Groth's first career goal. Groth knocked the ball into the lower right corner off a pass to the box from Kenadie Carlson for the score.
The Musketeers' score held steady at two throughout the remainder of the match. Toledo's offensive attack increased in the second half, taking six shots on goal in the second half. Rachel Piccus collected all six shots for saves and a second win on the season as the Musketeers prevailed, 2-0.
BIG EAST Rookie of the Week Samantha Dewey led a balanced Musketeers offense with two shots, and four different Musketeers attempted shots-on-goal.
Groth entering the scoring column marks the sixth Musketeer to score in the young 2015 season, matching the total number of Musketeers who scored in 2014. Xavier's eight goals through three games match 80 percent of the Musketeers total goals from the 2014 season.
Xavier is back in action on Sunday when the Musketeers travel to Morehead State to face off against the Eagles at 1 p.m. More information, including links to live stats, will be available from GoXavier.com
