
Women's Soccer Heads South to Morehead State

CINCINNATI - After knocking off Toledo in the home opener, the Xavier women's soccer team (2-1-0) will head to Morehead, Ky. to face the MSU Eagles on Sunday at Jayne Stadium. First kick is set for 1:00 p.m. ET. Live stats will be available from MSUEagles.com.

Xavier is coming off a 2-0 win over Toledo at the XU Soccer Complex on Friday evening. Senior Catherine Allon scored what would prove to be the game winner less than eight minutes into the match off of pass from Andie Kennard. Skylar Groth scored the final tally of the game at the 30 minute mark to set the final margin of victory at two for the Musketeers.

Morehead State (1-2-0) comes into the game after collecting its first win of the season on Friday night against Bowling Green State. MSU's Dani Wilson scored at the 60 minute mark off a penalty kick to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead. BGSU tied the match at one less than five minutes later, sending the game into overtime. In the ninth minute of extra time, Wilson struck again to seal the win for Morehead State.

Sunday's match will be the ninth meeting all time between the two schools, with Xavier leading the series with a record of 7-0-1. The series dates back to 1985, when the Musketeers routed the Eagles, 11-0, at home. The Eagles earned their first result in the series in the most recent matchup, a 0-0 double-overtime draw in Cincinnati last season.

SCOUTING MOREHEAD
Prior to the win against Bowling Green, the Eagles opened the season with a pair of home losses to Illinois-Chicago and Wright State. MSU fell behind, 2-0, early to UIC before Tonia Parisi scored off a throw in at the 34 minute mark to make the score 2-1. The Eagles were unable to score the equalizer.

Against Wright State, Dani Wilson scored just before the half to put the Eagles up 1-0 on the Raiders, but three goals in a 10-minute span in the second half went unanswered, giving MSU the 3-1 loss.

Â Doss has posted a team-high six points through three games on her two goals and two assists. Allon is tied for third in scoring with four points on two goals, including the game-winner against Toledo and the game-tying goal at Evansville.

Four sophomores have registered points through three games, led by four points for Kenadie Carlson who has collected a pair of assists this season to go with a goal against Evansville.

Maddie Tierney and Skylar Groth have each notched the first goals of their careers in the early season. In the 93rd minute of the match against Evansville, Tierney found the ball off a blocked shot from freshman Andie Kennard and knocked it into the bottom left corner of the net, giving the Musketeers the 3-2 win in OT.

Groth knocked in the first goal of her career against Toledo off a cross from Addie Englehart who was set up by Carlson.

Englehart, a sophomore transfer from Wright State, has collected two points on a pair of assists, including Groth's goal against Toledo and Tori Doss' game-tying goal against Purdue.

ROOKIE HONORS
Newcomer Samantha Dewey collected Rookie of the Week honors from the BIG EAST Conference for the week of Aug. 24 thanks to her offensive performance in the first two games of the season. After the Musketeers found themselves in a 2-0 deficit at Purdue, Dewey knocked in the first goal of her college career shortly before the half to move Xavier within striking distance. After the Musketeers tied the game at 2-2, Dewey fed the ball to Tori Doss to put Xavier ahead, 3-2, against the Boilermakers. Dewey also assisted sophomore Kenadie Carlson's goal in the 3-2 win at Evansville. Dewey brought her point total to five, second highest on the team, with an assist against Toledo.

DOSS CONTINUES TO COLLECT ACCOLADES
Junior Tori Doss took home her second career nomination to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after posting a team-high two goals during the first two games of the season. After starting the second half with a 2-1 deficit at Purdue, Doss struck less than five minutes into the second half to tie the score up, 2-2. Doss' second goal of the season came minutes later to give Xavier the 3-2 lead on the Boilermakers. Doss also dished out two assists in the 3-2 win at Evansville to total six points on the weekend. She was previously honored the week of Sept. 8, 2014. Doss also previously earned Rookie of the Week honors from the BIG EAST during the 2013 season.

OFFENSIVE ATTACK ON THE RISE
During the season-opening road trip through the Hoosier State, the Musketeer offense posted six goals in two games against Evansville and Purdue. After adding a pair at home against Toledo, the three-game offensive output (8 goals) equals 80 percent of the total goals scored for the entire 2014 season (10). The eight goals were scored by six different Musketeers, the same number who entered the scoring column for the entirety of the 2014 season.

NEWCOMER NOTES
Freshman Samantha Dewey also made her mark on the other football field, as a kicker for the Triton High School (Fairdale, Ind.) football team. During her senior season, Dewey hit a 32-yard extra point to tie the score with Lutheran High School. Minutes later, she nailed a 23-yard field goal with 4.4 seconds left to seal a 17-14 win, an accomplishment that was featured in Sept. 22, 2014 issue of Sports Illustrated.
