Volleyball Falls in Four Sets at Cincinnati

Musketeers end season-opening weekend 2-1
CINCINNATI - Xavier volleyball dropped its final match of the Queen City Classic at crosstown rival Cincinnati, 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 18-25, 18-25), on Saturday night at Fifth Third Arena. The loss snapped a three-game win streak in the series for the Musketeers (2-1).

Abbey Bessler posted her second double-double in as many matches, pacing the Musketeers with 14 kills and 16 digs. Samantha Foti and Meredith Klare both added 16 digs in the loss.

Kristen Massa was the only other Musketeer with double-figure kills with 10. Sofia Peterson chipped in eight, while Makayla Agin and Lauren Frilling both finished with six.

Mackenzi Humm dished out a team-high 25 assists, while McKena Estes added 17.

The two squads were tied 6-6 in the opening set before the Bearcats (2-1) used a 4-1 run to take a 10-7 advantage and a lead they would not relinquish. Xavier got with two points (20-18) late in the set, but committed three errors down the stretch as the Bearcats held on the for the 25-19 win.

After hitting .175 in the opening frame, the Musketeers posted a .414 hitting percentage in set two to post a 25-17 victory. Peterson hit .571 in the frame with four kills.

Carly Nolan posted six of her 14 kills in the fourth set as the Bearcats recorded a .438 hitting percentage in the frame to capture the set, 25-18. Cincinnati took advantage of 12 Xavier errors in the final frame, winning the set 25-18.

Jordan Thompson paced four Bearcats with double-figures kills as the freshman had a match-high 15 kills to go along with a .520 hitting percentage. Parker Shepherd added a match-high 28 assists, while Abby Williams had a match-high 20 digs.

Xavier returns to action at the Ohio Bobcat Tournament on Sept. 4-5 in Athens, Ohio. The Musketeers will face Michigan, Ohio and LSU during tournament play.
