
Women's Soccer Hosts EKU for Sunday Matinee

CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's soccer teams looks to build on a two-game win streak, hosting the EKU Colonels at the XU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. First kick is set for 1:00 p.m. Live streaming video and live stats will be available from GoXavier.com.
On Friday, Xavier topped IUPUI, 2-0, for its fourth win of the season (4-2-0). After going into the break tied, 0-0, sophomore Kenadie Carlson struck less than 10 minutes into the second half off a pass from senior Catherine Allon. The goal marked Carlson's fourth goal of the season. Xavier leading scorer Samantha Dewey increased the lead to two shortly after, scoring her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Carlson. The defense finished with a clean sheet for the second straight game, its third shut-out of the season. With the win, the Musketeers surpassed the totals wins from the 2014 season (3) in just six games.
Eastern Kentucky (0-6-0) was last in action on Sept. 7 when the Colonels traveled to Marshall. The Thundering Herd took a 1-0 lead two minutes into the game, and pushed its advantage to three shortly after halftime. EKU cut into the lead at the 59 minute mark on Cassie Smith's first goal of the season to set the score at 3-1. Marshall quickly responded, scoring two goals in the next three minutes to set the final margin at 5-1.

The 2015 matchup with EKU is the sixth in series history, with the Musketeers leading 3-1-1 all time. The series dates back to 2005, when Xavier claimed a 2-0 win. Last season the match ended in a 0-0 draw after two overtimes in Richmond, Ky.

The Musketeers moved to 4-2-0 on Friday night after topping IUPUI, 2-0. Through just six games in 2015, Xavier has exceeded its win total from the 2014 season (3). Against the Jaguars, Xavier's leading scorers Samantha Dewey and Kenadie Carlson led the way offensively, with Carlson scoring the winning goal off a Catherine Allon pass less than 10 minutes into the second half. Dewey scored the insurance goal off a pass from Carlson seven minutes later. The Xavier defense posted a second straight shut-out, it's third of the season.

Through six games, 10 different Musketeers have scored points after only nine did so for all of 2014. Xavier has exceeded its offensive output for last season (10 goals) in just four weeks, posting 16 goals thus far in 2015. Seven Musketeers have knocked in a goal, while eight different Musketeers have collected assists.

Xavier's offense leads the conference with its ability to create attacking situations, leading the BIG EAST in assists. XU leads the conference with 3.0 assists per game, which ranks sixth in the country. The Musketeers are also top in the BIG EAST with 15 total assists, a number that stands at 10th in NCAA DI. Samantha Dewey leads the Musketeers with a BIG EAST-best three assists, which ranks 11th in the country among individuals.

The Musketeers are also among the nation's leaders in points, with a BIG EAST-best 8.6 points per game, with 43 total points scored (2nd most in BIG EAST). As a team, Xavier ranks 12th in points per game, and 22nd in overall points in NCAA DI. Dewey's team-high 11 points through five games ranks second in the conference and 21st in the country. Samantha Dewey became the third Musketeer to earn a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this season, joining Tori Doss (8/24) and Kenadie Carlson (8/31). Dewey was honored after posting a hat trick against Marian in the Musketeers' only game last weekend. Those three goals gave Dewey a team-high four on the season to go with three assists (matching Maddie Tierney for team-high) for a total of 11 points. Dewey previously earned Rookie of the Week Honors from the conference for the week of August 24.

Senior Kassidy Mikula scored the first goal of her Xavier career on Sunday during a 5-0 win over Marian. The Washington, Mich. native scored after Maddy John crossed to Skylar Groth, setting Mikula up in the box to put Xavier up, 4-0, on the Knights just before halftime.

Sophomore Kenadie Carlson put the Musketeers up 3-0 on Marian on Sunday after bending a corner kick into the goal at the '30 mark. The goal gave Carlson a total of three goals on the season, second most on the team. Carlson also has a pair of assists for a total of nine points through five games, after scoring four points on two goals during her rookie season.
