Women's Soccer Rallies Late but Falls, 2-1, to Ohio
09.18.15 | Women's Soccer
CINCINNATI – Facing a 2-0 deficit with 10 minutes remaining, sophomore Kenadie Carlson scored to close the gap to one, sparking a late push on offense for the Xavier women's soccer team. The Musketeers created good opportunities to tie, but failed to score in the closing minutes, falling 2-1 to Ohio (2-5-0) on Friday evening. Xavier moves to 5-3-0 on the season.
Carlson found the right side of the net off a pass from Samantha Dewey inside the six yard box at the 80:54 mark to cut a 2-0 Ohio lead down to one. The goal is Carlson's fifth of the season, matching Samantha Dewey for team high for the season.
The Musketeer offense responded to Carlson's score by increasing its attack on offense, creating a pair of good chances for the Musketeers to tie in the final 10 minutes. Maddie Tierney found the ball in the box and shot towards the left side, forcing the Ohio goalkeeper to make the save to prevent the score at the 83 minute mark.
Minutes later, a corner kick from Carlson found Jessica Miller just outside the six-yard box. Miller's shot to tie the game went just over the goal, keeping the score set at 2-1 in favor of the Bobcats.
Ohio took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal from Holly Harris at the 32 minute mark and extended the lead to two after Stephanie Rowland's shot found the net at the 59 minute mark.
Xavier out-shot the Bobcats, 16-12, including seven shots on goal. The Musketeers, who had previously erased two-goal deficits in a 3-2 win over Evansville and a 4-3 loss at Purdue, created nine second half shots, but were unable to find the equalizer. Freshman Samantha Dewey led the Musketeers with three shots.
Junior goalkeeper Rachel Piccus collected four saves on the evening to keep the Musketeers within striking distance.
"Give Ohio credit, they created three pretty good chances and scored on two of them," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood after the game. "On the other side of things, we created nine or 10 good chances and only finished one. You don't get a better chance than we had with two minutes to go that should have put us in overtime, on something we've been working on for the past two weeks."
The Musketeers return to the pitch on Sunday to face Cincinnati in the final match before BIG EAST play begins.
"We've got a quick turnaround with UC on Sunday," said Sherwood. "They didn't play tonight, so we'll work on getting our legs back and look forward to a great crowd on Sunday evening in our last non-conference game."
First kick with the Bearcats is set for 6:30 p.m. at the XU Soccer Complex. Live streaming video and live stats will be available from GoXavier.com.
