Musketeers Post Season-High 12 Blocks, Defeat Friars in Three Sets

CINCINNATI - Xavier volleyball posted a season-high 12 blocks on Friday night as the Musketeers moved to 2-0 in BIG EAST play with a three set win (25-22, 25-13, 25-11) over Providence at Cintas Center.

XU moves to 6-6 (2-0 BIG EAST), while Providence falls to 9-6 (0-1 BIG EAST). The Musketeers are now 4-0 all-time against the Friars.

Abbey Bessler led Xavier with her seventh double-double of the year, recording a match-high 12 kills and 21 digs. Makayla Agin added eight kills and Lauren Frilling chipped in seven.

McKena Estes dished out a match-high 22 assists, while Mackenzi Humm added 12. Defensively, eight different players had a block - paced by Frilling who had five block assists.

The opening set had five ties and two lead changes. Tied at 21, the Musketeers used a 4-1 run capped by Laura Grossman kill to win the frame, 25-22. Grossman had three of her five kills in the first set.

Xavier never trailed in set two or three, winning the sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-11. The Musketeers had their highest hitting percentage in the third set, posting a .435 hitting percentage.

Kayla Fitzgerald and Abigail Dix led the Friars with five kills each, while Jordan Wiesler had a team-high 13 assists. Michelle Cruz recorded a team-high 14 digs.

Xavier returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 against St. John's. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
