Freshman Ties for Second, Team Finishes Third
VERONA, N.Y. – Freshman Daniel Wetterich finished tied for second in his collegiate debut this weekend, leading the Xavier men's golf team to a third-place team result at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament concluded on Monday afternoon.
The Musketeers shot 295-291 in the first two rounds for a total of 586, and put up a team score of 297 in the final round for a three round total of 883 (+19). Only Cleveland State and Missouri, the host team, finished with better team scores.
Wetterich, in his first ever collegiate tournament, finished tied for second individually after carding a final round 71 (-1). The Cincinnati native shot a 70 (-2) the first round followed by an even second round, which put him in a tie for fifth heading into today's finale. Wetterich wrapped the two day event with a three-round score of 213 (-3).
Xavier's top returner, sophomore Jose Montaño, shot a 75 (+3) in the final round for a three round total of 72-74-75 (221, +5). Montaño finished tied for 18th.
Junior transfer Fox Morrissey, also competing in his first tournament for the Musketeers, shot a 78 (+6) in the final round for a three round total of 73-71-78 (222, +6). Morrissey finished in 22nd place.
Senior Matt Gerard finished in the top-50 as well. Gerard shot a final round 74 (+2) for a three round total of 80-77-74 (231, +15). Gerard finished T-50th.
Junior Matt Wetterich shot a final round 77 (+5) for a three round total of 81-74-77 (232, +16) and finished tied for 53rd.
Graduate student John Burger shot two 79's in the first two rounds before withdrawing prior to the start of Monday's final round.
The golf team travels to South Bend, Ind. next for the Fighting Irish Golf Classic on September 22nd.
