No. 25 Blue Demons Top Musketeers on Sunday Afternoon

Raeshaun Gaffney scored a game-high 21 points in the loss
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 70-53 contest to No. 25 DePaul on Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center.

Both teams entered the game tied for first place in the BIG EAST standings with 5-1 records. Xavier fell to 14-4 (5-2 BIG EAST), while the Blue Demons improved to 14-6 (6-1 BIG EAST).

Raeshaun Gaffney scored game-high 21 points, including 10 points in the fourth quarter. The junior guard was 8-for-14 from the floor and 4-for-7 from the foul line.

Gaffney also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds as the Blue Demons held a 37-35 advantage on the glass. Megan Podkowa had a game-high nine rebounds, while Jessica January added eight.

Briana Glover and Aliyah Zantt both chipped in eight points for the Musketeers. Jenna Crittendon and Leah Schaefer both dished out three assists as the Musketeers had an assist on 13 of their 18 made field goals.

Xavier finished the game 15-for-22 from the foul line, while DePaul was 1-for-2. The Blue Demons hit 44.6 percent of their shot attempts in the game and the Musketeers posted a .353 field-goal percentage.

The Blue Demons hit four of their first six shots to take an early 10-2 lead. Xavier responded with an 11-4 run on 5-for-8 shooting to get with one, 14-13, with less than a minute left in the first quarter.

The one-point deficit would be as close as the Musketeers would get to the Blue Demons as they outscored Xavier, 16-9, to end the half and take a 30-22 lead into the locker room.

DePaul opened the second half on a 6-2 run to take its third double-figure lead of the game, 36-24. The Blue Demons maintained their double-figure advantage for the remainder of the contest to post the 70-53 victory.

Three DePaul players scored in double figures, led by Podkowa's 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Brooke Schulte added 13 points and Mart'e Grays chipped in 11.
