The team earns its first win of the season.
CINCINNATI – Xavier women's tennis played Friday night against Liberty at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club. The Musketeers are now 1-1 on the season with the 6-1 victory over the Flames.
Doubles play started off strong with quick victories from Cristina Di Lorenzo and Alex Brinker and Lauren Ghidotti and Sophia Abelson. Both doubles pairings won their match 6-1.
Sydney Liggins started singles play off strong with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Belen Rivera. Xavier led the match 2-0, until Maria Khral of Liberty beat Di Lorenzo, 6-4, 6-4, to earn the Flame's sole point of the match.
Amina Ismail, Brinker and Abelson won their matches in three sets after all winning the first, dropping the second and coming back to win the third. Ismail beat Anna Dollar, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, Brinker beat Evangeline Crist, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, and Abelson beat Rebekah Anderson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Rounding out singles play was Ghidotti, who took care of business, 6-0, 6-2, against Emily Groeneveld.
"We all played with passion today and I could feel the energy from all around," said senior captain Brinker. "I am very proud of my team and can't wait to compete this season with these amazing girls!"
The Musketeers are back in action Saturday, Jan. 30 against Indiana. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m. at Western Tennis & Fitness Club.
