Musketeers continue BIG EAST action by hosting Marquette on Thursday
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Xavier women's soccer held No. 6/3 Georgetown within striking distances for most of the afternoon, but a tally in the closing minute for the Hoyas set the final margin at 2-0 in favor of GU. Xavier moves to 6-6-1 on the season and 0-3-0 in BIG EAST play.
Â
Georgetown took a 1-0 advantage in the 20th minute when Amanda Carolan scored off a pass from Chloe Knott. The Musketeers held the Hoyas to a single tally in the first half, with Rachel Piccus making the start and playing the first 45. Piccus finished with a save and a goal against.
Toni Bizzarro played the second half in-goal for the Musketeers, collecting a pair of saves and hold Georgetown without a score until the 87th minute when the Hoyas added an insurance goal on a breakaway play for Caitlin Farrell who crossed to Crystal Thomas for the goal.
Courtney Kobashigawa and Maddie Tierney played the full 90 minutes in the backfield, helping to limit the dangerous chances for one of the top teams in the country.
Â
After a first half where the Musketeers' offensive attack was limited, with the best chance of the first period coming for Samantha Dewey, a look on goal that forced GU's goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman to make the stop.
Xavier turned up the intensity in the second period, pressing for the game-tying goal. The Musketeers continued to press until late in the game creating a number of chances and matching Georgetown with a pair of corner kicks, both coming late after the Musketeers worked the ball into the box to have the ball cleared by GU. The most dangerous look of the second half for the Musketeers was an opportunity for Kenadie Carlson from about 10 yards out with 15 minutes remaining, a play broken up by aggressive defense from the Hoyas.
Tori Doss and Jessica Miller each had a second half chance as well, with Doss getting a look inside the box that would have tied the match 1-1, Â shooting just wide of the net.
Â
"I thought the first 25 minutes of the first half we were really good, then we dropped off a little bit. Second half, I think were unfortunate not to get a penalty that would have tied the game late, it felt like we had them on their heels the last 10 minutes. To play the third-ranked team in the country as well as we did, down to the final three minutes was great. Obviously we were pushing numbers forward trying to get the game-tying goal and gave up a counter attack late for that second goal. Also to have that kind of performance after playing Thursday night with a long trip, with Georgetown having the night off on Thursday was another testament to our kids' fortitude. We look forward to seeing Marquette at the end of the week."
Â
Next up, Xavier hosts Marquette on Thursday, Oct. 6 in a match that has been moved to the NKU Soccer Stadium on the campus of Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Ky. The match is still set to begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
After Marquette, the Musketeers return to the road to face Seton Hall on Oct. 9 at 1:00 p.m.
