Balanced Offense Leads to Four-Set Win Over Pirates

Four Musketeers post 10 or more kills in the win
CINCINNATI - Four Musketeers recorded 10 or more kills on Friday afternoon as the Xavier volleyball team defeated Seton Hall in four sets (25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-18) at Cintas Center.

The Musketeers improved to 13-11 (7-4 BIG EAST), while the Pirates fell to 10-13 (4-6 BIG EAST). Xavier also moved to 6-2 in the all-time series with the Pirates.

• Abbey Bessler posted a match-high 18 kills, her second consecutive match with 18 kills. The senior outside hitter added a .350 hitting percentage and six digs.

• Senior Sofia Peterson chipped in 11 kills with a .500 hitting percentage. Brooke Betts and Alexis Newsome both added 10 kills. Newsome also hit .692, while Betts hit .588.

• Juniors Kristen Massa and Lauren Frilling combined to record 13 kills. Frilling also had five blocks.

• Xavier posted four more total team blocks (12-8) than the Pirates. Alexis Newsome led the Musketeers with 10 blocks (one solo, nine assisted). Xavier has posted 10 or more blocks in a match eight times this season.

• Mackenzi Humm dished out a match-high 25 assists to go along with nine digs. Two other players tied Humm for the team-high in digs as Samantha Foti and Meredith Klare each had nine.

• McKena Estes chipped in 24 assists and one service ace. The Musketeers had two more service aces (5-3) than Seton Hall.

• Xavier never trailed in the opening stanza and closed the set on a 6-1 run, winning 25-16. The Musketeers hit .500 in the opening set.

• Abbey Bessler had six kills with a .625 hitting percentage. McKena Estes had seven assists, while Mackenzi Humm had five assists and five digs.

• Xavier jumped out to an early 8-4 lead. The Musketeers led by as many as eight twice in the set before posting a 25-17 victory.

• Alexis Newsome had five kills on five attempts, while posting three blocks.

• The third set had 10 ties and five lead changes. Tied at 23-23, the Pirates scored the final two points of the frame to make the match score, 2-1.
