Swimming Opens Home Schedule with BGSU on Friday, Heads to Cleveland State Saturday

Meet with Falcons begins at 5 PM at O'Connor Sports Center
CINCINNATI - Xavier men's and women's swimming take on a pair of opponents from northern Ohio this weekend, opening the home schedule with a meet against Bowling Green on Friday. The Musketeers host the Falcons at O'Connor Sports Center at 5:00 p.m. The Musketeers continue the weekend at Cleveland State on Saturday, facing the Vikings at 1:00 p.m. at CSU's Robert F. Busbey Natatorium in Cleveland, Ohio.

BOWLING GREEN FALCONS

- Xavier last faced off with the Falcons, who only field a women's team, in 2013 when the Musketeers hosted a women's dual meet at O'Connor Sports Center.
- BGSU opened the season by hosting Oakland, Youngstown, Toledo and Akron for the Tom Stubbs relays.
- The Falcons also traveled to the Dennis Stark Relays, hosted by Notre Dame. BGSU placed second, falling to the host-Fighting Irish while defeating Wright State, Olivet Nazarene, Illinois State and Indiana State.
- Bowling Green State started their dual meets with a victory over the University of Toledo 196-95, winning 13 out of 16 events.
- Victoria Griffin went 3-0 on the individual events she participated in against Toledo, winning the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle.

- Cleveland State started off the season taking fourth out of seven at the Colgate Fall Classic and taking a win against St. Bonaventure earlier in October.
- Both the men and women competed against St. Bonaventure. The men won 145-96 while the women won 137-106.
- Cleveland State women won nine of 11 events while the men won eight of 11 events.
- Junior Jamie VanDewerker set the fastest time in the Horizon League this season in the 1000 free event.

- The Musketeers last met CSU in a dual meet at UC last season, where the Xavier women topped the Vikings 184 to 109, while the men fell 163-124.
- Xavier also faced CSU at the 2015 CSU Magnus Cup, where the men finished second of six, falling only to the host Vikings after the three-day event. The women placed third in a 10-team field, finishing behind Akron and Duquesne.Â

- The Musketeers were last in action at Miami on Saturday. The women opened the meet with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay.
- Emily Conners took the top spot in the 50 free and 100 free.
- Caroline Gaertner took the top spot in the 100 fly and the 100 back, and had a strong showing in the 200 back, taking second.
- The Musketeer women fell by a final score of 180-82.

- The Xavier men opened the meet with the Redhawks with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay.
- Landon Clark scored the first win on the men's side in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.07, moving his standing in the Xavier records up to 13th.
- Rodrigo Suriano swept the freestyle sprints for the men.
- Knox Hitt, the reigning BIG EAST Champion in the 100 fly, took the top spot in the event.
- The Musketeer men fell by a final score of 155-107.

- After leading the Musketeer men with a pair of individual wins against Miami, Xavier men's swimmer Rodrigo Suriano was named the male BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. Suriano was also named CollegeSwimming.com's Male Swimmer of the Week for the conference.Â
- Suriano took the top spot in the freestyle sprints against Miami, in the Musketeers' second meet of the weekend. The native of San Salvador, El Salvador posted a BIG EAST Championship qualifying time of 21.00 in the 50 free. Suriano followed that up with a time of 46.13 in the 100 free, also meeting the BIG EAST standard.
- Caroline Gaertner was named CollegeSwimming.com's BIG EAST Swimmer of the Week, and a notable performer by the BIG EAST Conference after she won a pair of individual events for the Xavier women against Miami (Ohio), taking first in the 100 back with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 56.99 and winning the 100 fly in 56.36, also qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships.
- Suriano is the second Musketeer to earn Weekly Honors from the Conference office. Freshman Emily Conners was named the women's BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week by the conference in the first week of the season. In addition to picking up the first honor of the season from the conference office, Conners was also named CollegeSwimming.com's female BIG EAST Swimmer of the Week. Conners earned the honor after she picked up a pair of wins in freestyle sprints at the Big 12 vs. BIG EAST Weekend at West Virginia University, with wins in the 50 free (24.50) and 100 free (53.12).

- Xavier heads to Denison on Saturday Nov. 5, with events beginning at 1:00 p.m.Â
- The Musketeers have the next week off before heading back to Cleveland State for the CSU Magnus Cup on Nov. 18-20. Prelims are set to begin at 9:00 a.m., finals will begin at 5:00 p.m. each day.
