Musketeers compete in three-day meet for fifth-straight season
CINCINNATI - Xavier men's and women's swimming close out the fall schedule this weekend, traveling to Cleveland to take part in the fifth annual Cleveland State University Magnus Cup. The Musketeer women will face off against 12 other squads, while the men will be one of nine teams competing during the three-day competition.

- Prelims each day are set to begin at 9:00 a.m. Finals sessions for Friday and Saturday will begin at 5:00 p.m., while Sunday's finals will begin at 3:00 p.m.
- All-session passes for adults are $15, while all-session passes for seniors and children are $10. An all-day pass for a single day is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and children.

- Two swimmers set school records in the 400 IM and the 100 freestyle on November 4 over Juniata.

- Last time out, the CSU men and women both lost to Ohio State (Nov. 11).
- This is the second time this season that Cleveland State faces Xavier. The Vikings won on both sides, with the women topping the Musketeers 159-128 while the men won 184-102 on October 29.

- The Golden Bears took their first victory on Saturday, Nov. 12 in a dual competition against Alderson Broaddus.
- Finished first in the 100 backstroke, 1000 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle as well as the 50 freestyle and 200 IM.

- The Xavier women placed third of 10 teams while the men took second of six.
- Katie Kerr set a new school record in the 500 free, taking first with a time of 4:55.17.
- A pair of Musketeers collected first place finishes. Erik Biernat won the 100 IM in a time of 52.31 and Knox Hitt won the 50 fly in a time 22.39.

- The Musketeers were last in action two weeks ago at Denison. The Xavier women took a pair of individual wins against the Big Red, one of the top programs in Division III.
- Emily Saugstad took the top spot in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.62.
- Emily Conners took the top spot in the 100 free with a time of 52.89. Conners also picked up a top-three finish in the 50 free with a time of 24.50.
- Xavier's 'A' squad scored in first place in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:37.37.
- The Musketeers fell by a final score of 150-107.

- The Xavier men also faced off with the Dukes, taking the top spot in seven events.
- Xavier's men opened the meet by taking the top spot in the 200 medley relay.
- Sam Johanns took first in the 100 back.
- Landon Clark touched the wall first in the 200 fly, finishing in 1:53.04.
- Rodrigo Suriano posted a time of 20.98 in the 50 free to take first. Suriano followed that with a time of 46.04 in the 100 free for another win.
- Matthew Dyer took the top spot in the 200 breast. Michael Pettinichi made it two of the top three for the Musketeers, taking third.
- The Xavier men closed the event with another relay win, finishing the 200 free relay in a time of 1:23.43.
- Xavier fell to the Big Red, 150.5-111.5.

WEEKLY AWARDS |
- Xavier men's and women's swimming swept the BIG EAST Weekly Awards for the week of Nov. 1 with senior Rodrigo Suriano and sophomore Caroline Gaertner earning BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week.
- Gaertner earned the first Weekly Award from the conference offices of her Xavier career after leading the Musketeer women with a pair of wins against Cleveland State, touching the wall first in the 100 back with a time of 57.05 and in the 100 fly with a time of 56.65.
- Gaernter's performance also earned the BIG EAST Swimmer of the Week recognition from CollegeSwimming.com. This marks the second-straight week she's earned the award on the women's side.
- Suriano earned a second straight weekly award from the BIG EAST after taking the top spot in the 50 free and 100 free for a second meet in a row.
- Against Cleveland State, the senior's 100 free finish of 46.08 is the top time posted in the event by a BIG EAST competitor this season. His time of 21.26 in the 50 free is the fastest in the conference this season aside from his own time of 21.00 against Miami (Ohio). Suriano also swam the freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay that placed second against Cleveland State, finishing in 1:33.41. Suriano took the anchor leg of the second-place finishing Xavier 'A' team in the 400 free relay, finishing in a time of 3:05.82, which marks the top time in the BIG EAST so far this season.
- The award is the second of Suriano's career after winning last week for his performance against Miami (Ohio).
- Between the men's and women's squad, the Musketeers are three-of-three earning weekly honors so for this season including Emily Conners' honor from both the conference offices and CollegeSwimming.com in the opening week of the season.
- Conners earned the honor after she picked up a pair of wins in freestyle sprints at the Big 12 vs. BIG EAST Weekend at West Virginia University, with wins in the 50 free (24.50) and 100 free (53.12).

UPCOMING SCHEDULE |
- The Magnus Cup is the final full-squad meet of the Fall semester for the Musketeers. Selected qualifiers will compete in the AT&T Winter Nationals in Atlanta, Ga. from Dec. 1-3. The entire squad will next be in action on Jan. 6, 2017, when Xavier travels to Indianapolis to face IUPUI.
