Gaffney Leads Xavier to Third Straight Victory in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout

Musketeers defeat Bearcats, 72-61, at Fifth Third Arena
CINCINNATI – Raeshaun Gaffney scored a game-high 24 points on Sunday afternoon, leading Xavier women's basketball to a 72-61 win over Cincinnati in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout at Fifth Third Arena.
The Musketeers (7-1) have now won three straight in the series and 10 of the 13 meetings between the two schools. The Bearcats moved to 6-3 on the year following the loss.
• Raeshaun Gaffney went 5-for-13 from the floor and 11-for-12 from the charity stripe. The senior guard was also 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
• Maddison Blackwell was the only other Musketeer in double figures as the senior forward scored 14 points. She also went 6-for-10 from the floor.
• Xavier hit 90.5 percent of its free throws, going 19-for-21 from the foul line. The Musketeers also added 16 second-chance points off of 11 offensive rebounds.
• Xavier held a 33-26 advantage on the glass. Leah Schaefer pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, while adding four assists and a game-high three blocks.
• Xavier forced 14 Bearcat turnovers, converting the miscues into 16 points. Raeshaun Gaffney posted a game-high three steals.
• Marquia Turner added nine points, five rebounds and four assists in the win. Kindell Fincher chipped eight points with two 3-pointers.
• Xavier started the game on a 7-2 run on 3-for-5 shooting with six points coming from Maddison Blackwell. Cincinnati responded by scoring 12 straight points to take a 14-7 advantage with 4:40 on the clock. Xavier battled back to tie the game at 20-20 heading into the second quarter.
• Maddison Blackwell had six points on 3-for-5 shooting. Xavier hit 50 percent of its shot attempts (8-for-16).
• Xavier started the quarter on a 12-4 run to take it largest lead of the half, 32-24, capped by back-to-back three pointers from Raeshaun Gaffney and Kindell Fincher. Cincinnati would get within one, 36-35, on a Shanice Johnson three pointer with 2:02 on the clock before a Leah Schaefer layup in the closing seconds put Xavier up, 38-35, at the break.
• Maddison Blackwell had 12 points at halftime, while Raeshaun Gaffney added 11. Xavier also held a 17-12 advantage on the glass.
• Xavier outscored Cincinnati, 18-11, in the third quarter. The Musketeers got their first double-figure lead with nine seconds left on the clock on a Marquia Turner jump shot as Xavier took a 56-46 lead into the final quarter.
• Raeshaun Gaffney had nine points on 2-for-4 shooting. She also went 4-for-4 from the foul line.
• Xavier started the quarter on a 4-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 60-46, with 7:44 left in regulation. Cincinnati got within eight, 65-57, with just over a minute on the clock before Xavier sealed the victory from the foul line. Xavier went 11-for-12 from the charity stripe. Raeshaun Gaffney went 4-for-4 to pace the Musketeers.
• Xavier travels to Las Vegas on Dec. 19-21 for the Puerto Rico Classic. The Musketeers open tournament play against Oklahoma on Dec. 19. Tournament officials moved the tournament due to concerns over the risk of the Zika outbreak in Puerto Rico.
