Late Three-Run Innings Sink Baseball at Arizona State

Musketeers wrap up weekend series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Arizona State posted three-run innings in the third and sixth to pull away from Xavier, taking game three of a weekend series, 8-2, at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The Sun Devils scored two in the bottom of the first and chased Musketeer starter Brandon Johnson after 2.2 innings. ASU then added two more three run frames late to seal the win.

• Three Musketeers posted multi-hit games, including Dan Rizzie (2-for-4), Ethan Schmidt (2-for-4) and David Morton (2-for-4).
• Eight batters picked up a hit, including Rizzie, Schmidt, Morton and Matt Fallon (1-for-5), Nate Soria (1-for-4), Roger Danison (1-for-1), Joe Gellenbeck (1-for-3), Andre Jernigan (1-for-5) and Will LaRue (1-for-2).
• Joe Gellenbeck connected for his first career home run in the second inning, slamming a ball out to left field.

• Making his first career start, sophomore Brandon Johnson was chased after 2.2 innings – allowing seven hits and five earned runs.Â
• Taylor Williams made his Xavier debut and was lights out, tossing 2.1 innings of hitless, scoreless ball. The freshman from Castle Rock, Colo. struck out six of the seven batters he faced.
• Sam Czabala finished the game, tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless ball. The freshman allowed just two hits.

FIFTH INNING:Â Will LaRue led off with a triple to right center and Matt Fallon followed with a single through the left side to make it 5-2.

• Trent Astle is scheduled to take the ball for the Musketeers, making his season debut tomorrow.
