Xavier men looking for third-straight conference title
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Xavier swim program looks to close out its season with a pair of championships this weekend at the 2016 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championship at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y. Events begin Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 6:00 p.m. and continue until Saturday, Feb. 27, with preliminaries starting at 10:00 a.m. each day and finals set to begin at 6:00 p.m. each day.
Xavier took home a third place finish at last year's conference championship after placing 10 Musketeers on the All-BIG EAST Team. Among the eight All-BIG EAST returnees is sophomore Paxtyn Drew, the 2015 BIG EAST Champion in the 100 backstroke. Xavier also returns three other Musketeers who placed in the top three in individual events, Haley Dresner (100 breast), Jacquelyn Misanik (100 back), and Mackenna Rife (400 IM). Claire Brolsma, Molly Kroeger, Emily Wagner and Ashley Whiteley also return to bring back the core of Xavier's relays.
In to the mix the Musketeers have added a nine-person freshman class that has made an immediate impact on the program. Three newcomers have set school records on the Xavier women's side, including Katie Kerr in the 500 free (4:55.17), Caroline Gaertner in the 100 back (55.36) and Maggie Kauffeld in the 200 fly (2:04.88). Each of the nine newcomers has set a top-20 time during their rookie campaign.
The Musketeers will compete against reigning champions Villanova, as well as Georgetown, Seton Hall, Providence and Butler.
Xavier collected its second BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championship on the men's side last year, making the Musketeers two-for-two during their time in the BIG EAST. Xavier returns seven of its 12 All-BIG EAST honorees off of last year's team, including the 2015 BIG EAST Championship's Most Outstanding Performer on the men's side, Nick Foster.
Foster is one of four Musketeers who returns as the reigning BIG EAST Champion in individual events, winning the 500 free and 1650 free in 2015. Erik Biernat (200 IM), Luke Johanns (50 free, 100 free) and Arthur Smith (100 back, 200 back) also look to repeat as individual champions in 2016. Xavier also returns a strong core of last year's relays that swept the four-day competition.
Eight newcomers joined the Musketeers for the 2015-16 season, each setting a time during their first season with the Musketeers that stands in the top-20 times in school records.
Xavier will face off against Georgetown, Villanova, Seton Hall and Providence.
