GREENVILLE, N.C. – Following a tight match-up that took place February 5th against East Carolina University, men's tennis defeated Presbyterian College, 6-1, to improve to 3-1 overall this spring season.
In doubles competition, the Musketeers earned the doubles point and jumped out to an early lead over the Blue Hose. With wins, Xavier improved to an overall record of 5-6 in play.
In singles competition, Zach Mueck (3-1), Matt Bishop (3-0) and Arthur Stefani (3-1) kept their three match win streaks in tact, edging off each of their foes in two sets. Mueck defeated Danny Bruce, 6-4, 7-5, while Bishop got the better of Diego Manzanas, 7-5, 6-1. Stefani contributed to the trifecta, earning a win over Joel Roberts, 6-3, 6-4. Junior Jeremy Schneider and sophomore Gabriel Chaves Araujo also tallied wins of their own, perfecting Xavier's weekend play.
"Another good win today for our team," Head Coach Doug Matthews noted. "Doubles point was key. Then 1,2 and 3 singles won tight first sets to keep control of the match. Our energy was high all weekend and that needs to be a constant."
Men's tennis will be back in action, February 13th, at home, to take on the Redbirds of Ball State University. Dual match play will begin at 6 PM.
