Crittendon’s Put-Back Buzzer Beater Lifts Musketeers Over Bluejays

Xavier remains in second place of the BIG EAST standings with the win
CINCINNATI - Senior Jenna Crittendon hit the game-winning shot as time expired on Sunday afternoon, giving the Musketeers a 57-55 win over Creighton.
Raeshaun Gaffney missed a contested layup with five seconds remaining in regulation before Crittendon's put back on the rebound with 0.3 seconds on the clock sealed the win. Xavier defeated the Bluejays in the same fashion at home last season with a layup by Maleeka Kynard.
Xavier moved to 17-6 (8-4 BIG EAST) on the year, remaining in second place of the conference standings. The Musketeers have now won three in a row and improved to 15-2 when playing at Cintas Center. Creighton dropped to 12-13 (6-7 BIG EAST) with the loss.
Crittendon and Gaffney both scored 12 points to lead the Musketeers in scoring. Maddison Blackwell rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.
Xavier held a 33-32 advantage on the glass, led by Blackwell who had nine rebounds. Crittendon, Gaffney and Aliyah Zantt all added five rebounds.
After trailing 7-6 early in the first quarter, the Musketeers scored 11 unanswered points on 5-for-6 shooting to end the quarter and take a 15-7 lead. Xavier led by as many as 11 points, 26-15, with 1:59 left in the first half before taking a 31-24 lead into the locker room.
Blackwell led the Musketeers with 10 points at the break, while Gaffney added six. Xavier held an 18-17 advantage on the glass with Blackwell pulling down a team-high five rebounds.
Creighton hit five of its first eight shots in the second half to spark a 14-5 run and take its first lead of the game since the opening minutes of the game, 38-26. The Bluejays out scored the Musketeers, 16-7, in the third quarter to take a 40-38 advantage.
The Bluejays led by as many as seven points, 47-40, with 6:41 left in the game before the Musketeers closed the game on a 17-8 run on 5-for-8 shooting. Gaffney scored six of her 12 points during that span.
Xavier was 19-for-25 from the charity stripe with Blackwell going 6-for-7. Creighton was 4-for-8 from the foul line.
Audrey Faber led all scorers with 15 points, while MC McGrory added 12 for the Bluejays. Both players led the team on the glass with seven rebounds each.
Xavier returns to action at DePaul on Friday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. EST.
