Xavier matches its season high in home runs with four

CINCINNATI – Xavier baseball matched its season high in home runs with four on Wednesday afternoon as the Musketeers defeated in-state foe Miami (OH), 12-4, in the squad's home opener. Xavier improved to 4-12 on the year, while the RedHawks moved to 6-9.

XU AT THE PLATE

• Xavier finished with 10 hits, the team's sixth game of the year with 10 or more hits.
• Xavier matched its season high in home runs with four - the Musketeers also had four at Mercer on Feb. 28.
• The Musketeers scored 12 runs, the second most runs in a game by Xavier this season.
• Matt Fallon (3-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, HR) and Rylan Bannon (2-for-2, 3 R, 3 RBI, HR) both posted multi-hit games for the Musketeers.
• Nate Soria also had two runs, while Ethan Schmidt had four RBI.

XU ON THE MOUND

• Starter Trent Astle (1-2) picked up his first win of the season, allowing six hits and three runs in four innings of work. The junior left-handed pitcher also had four strikeouts.
• Junior Brad Kirschner pitched 2.2 innings of relief, collecting two strikeouts and surrendering one run and three hits.
• Trey Schramm made his team-leading sixth appearance as the freshman threw 1.1 scoreless innings. He had one strikeout and dropped his ERA to a team-best 2.45 ERA.
• Garrett Schilling pitched the final inning of the game, surrendering two hits with three strikeouts.
• Xavier matched its season-high in strikeouts with 10.

HOW THE MUSKETEERS SCORED

SECOND INNING: Nate Soria hit his first home run of the season with a two-run shot to center field.
FOURTH INNING: Rylan Bannon hit his second home run of the season with a one-out, three-run blast to left center. On the next at bat, Matt Fallon followed Bannon with a home run of his own - his first of the season - to left center.
SIXTH INNING: Matt Fallon hit a one-out RBI double down the left-field line to score the first of two Xavier runs in the inning. Fallon would come around to score later in the frame on a passed ball.
EIGHTH INNING: Ethan Schmidt hit a grand slam to left field for the final four runs of the game, his first home run of the season.

NEXT UP

• Xavier continues its homestand with a three-game series against Central Michigan on March 18-20. Game one of the series is slated for 3 p.m. on Friday.
