Lowther's Career Day Leads Xavier to First Shutout of Season

Sophomore pitcher throws eight strikeouts, Musketeers defeat Central Michigan, 5-0
CINCINNATI – Sophomore pitcher Zac Lowther threw a career-high eight strikeouts to lead Xavier baseball to its first shutout of the season, defeating Central Michigan, 5-0, on Friday afternoon at Hayden Field. The Musketeers move to 5-12 on the year, while the Chippewas drop to 4-13.
• Xavier finished with 13 hits, the team's seventh game of the year with 10 or more hits.
• Five Musketeers had multi-hit games, paced by Will Larue (3-for-5). Daniel Rizzie (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI), Joe Gellenbeck (2-for-4, 2 RBI, R), Andre Jernigan (2-for-4) and Nate Soria (2-for-3, RBI) also had multi-hit games.
• Joe Gellenbeck posted his team-leading fifth home run in the win, while Daniel Rizzie recorded his first home run of the year. Xavier has collected six home runs in its last two games.
• Starter Zac Lowther (2-2) threw a career-high eight strikeouts in the win. He did not walk any batters and scattered only three hits.
• Trey Schramm posted his first career save, throwing the final three innings of play. The freshman allowed three hits.
• The pitching staff did not walk any batters for the second time in as many games.
SECOND INNING: Joe Gellenbeck hit a solo homer to right field, his team-leading fifth of the season.
THIRD INNING: Daniel Rizzie hit his first homer of the season with a one-out shot to left field.
FIFTH INNING: A Joe Gellenbeck RBI single to left field scored the first of two runs in the inning. A Nate Soria sacrifice fly later in the frame scored Daniel Rizzie.
EIGHTH INNING: Rylan Bannon scored on a wild pitch.
• Game two of the weekend series is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 19.
