Senior shortstop homers, doubles twice to lead Musketeers to series win

NORMAL, Ill. – Senior shortstop Andre Jernigan exploded for four hits and six RBI to lead Xavier baseball to an 11-5 win over Illinois State on Sunday at Duffy Bass Field.

Xavier improves to 10-18 overall with the win, claiming its third weekend series of the season. Illinois State drops to 8-19 with the setback.

XU AT THE PLATE

• Andre Jernigan (4-for-5, 2 2B, HR, 6 RBI) capped a series with a bang for the second straight weekend. After hitting two homers and totaling 11 bases last Saturday against UC, the senior shortstop collected a career-high six RBI on Sunday.
• Joe Gellenbeck (3-for-5, 3 R) and Blaine Griffiths (3-for-5, RBI), Chris Givin (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Matt Fallon (2-for-4, 2 R) put up multi-hit games.
• Griffiths has now knocked in a run in three straight games.
• Rylan Bannon (1-for-4, R) and Will LaRue (1-for-4, R) also had hits for the Musketeers.

XU ON THE MOUND

• Damien Richard (2-1) lasted a career-high five innings, allowing three earned and striking out three to pick up the win.
• Trent Astle closed the door on the win, tossing four innings of two-run relief and fanning three.

HOW THE MUSKETEERS SCORED

THIRD INNING: Rylan Bannon singled to left field to lead the inning off, advancing to second on a hit by Matt Fallon. Bannon scored on a fielder's choice before a two out double by Andre Jernigan scored LaRue and Fallon. A batter later, Blaine Griffiths singled to center to score Jernigan.
FOURTH INNING: A one out single by Matt Fallon led to a run when Dan Rizzie singled to center. With two on and two out, Jernigan hit a bomb to left to drive in three more and make it an 8-2 game.
SIXTH INNING: Xavier rallied with two outs, getting an RBI double by Andre Jernigan and an RBI single by Chris Givin.
EIGHTH INNING: Joe Gellenbeck singled with one out, advancing on a hit by Jernigan and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Givin.
