
Women’s Tennis Is The 2016 BIG EAST Champion

The team defeated No. 1 DePaul, 4-2
CAYCE, S.C. – The No. 2 seeded Xavier women's tennis was crowned 2016 BIG EAST Women's Tennis Champion Sunday afternoon after beating No. 1 DePaul, 4-2, at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.
This is the first BIG EAST title by a women's sports team since joining the BIG EAST in 2013.
Doubles play started off with a big win from Sydney Liggins and Amina Ismail at No. 1 singles. They beat Rebeca Mitrea and Patricia Lancranjan, 6-2.
DePaul followed with a victory at No. 3 doubles over Lauren Ghidotti and Sophia Abelson, 6-3.
Alex Brinker and Cristina Di Lorenzo were left on the court at No. 2 doubles against Yuliya Shupenia and Zaina Sufi. The match was tied at 5-5. The Blue Demons won the next to have a one game edge on the Musketeers, 6-5. Brinker and Di Lorenzo responded forcing a tiebreak, which they won giving Xavier the first point of the match.
In singles play, DePaul was able to grab the first two points of singles play with Mitrea beating Brinker, 6-3, 6-2, and Lancranjan beating Di Lorenzo, 6-4, 6-4.
DePaul with the 2-1 advantage, Liggins downed Shupenia, 6-4, 6-4, to tie the match, 2-2.
Ismail, Abelson and Ghidotti were left in action seeking the final two points of the match.
Ismail dropped her first set at No. 3 singles, 6-2, and quickly took the second set, 6-3. She was up, 4-0, in the third before Cozac was forced to retire. Xavier led the match, 3-2.
With Abelson still keeping her second set close after dropping the first, Ghidotti was in position to finish the match for the Musketeers. She was able to win a hard-fought first set, 7-5. At 5-3, Ghidotti had the serve in her final game finishing it out to win the second set, 6-3, giving Xavier the win over DePaul, 4-2.
With the BIG EAST crown, the Musketeers earn an automatic berth to the Division I NCAA Women's Tennis Championship. The team will see where they will be playing Tuesday, May 3 via the Selection Show at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
