Musketeers in Position to Clinch BIG EAST Championship on Saturday After 15-10 Win Over 'Nova

Xavier plates season-high 15, has now won five straight series
CINCINNATI – Xavier baseball plated runs in each of its first five trips to the plate, hanging on late for a 15-10 win on a soggy Friday at Hayden Field.
With the win, XU improves to 26-28 overall and 13-4 in BIG EAST play. The Musketeers have now won 12 of their last 14 and clinched a fifth straight series victory.
A win on Saturday in the series finale will give Xavier a guaranteed BIG EAST regular season co-championship with Creighton. With a tie-breaker, the Musketeers would be the No. 1 overall seed in next week's tournament.
Villanova dropped to 20-31 overall and 5-12 in the league with the setback.

· Xavier collected 14 hits and scored a season-high 15 runs, tying a season-best by working eight walks.
· Joe Gellenbeck (3-for-6, 2 R) and Chris Givin (3-for-4, R, 2 RBI) paced the offense with three hits apiece.
· Dan Rizzie tied a career-high with four runs scored and put up a 2-for-4 line with three RBI. He also hit a two-run homer in the second inning, giving him nine for the season – a number that ranks third for Xavier and third in the BIG EAST. The senior catcher now has a team-best 19 multiple hit games this season.
· Will LaRue went 2-for-5, scoring a run and adding two stolen bases, giving him a team-high 28 on the year.
· Rylan Bannon (1-for-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB) tied a career-high, crossing the plate three times and adding his fifth homer of the season.
· Andre Jernigan (1-for-4, R, RBI), Nate Soria (1-for-3, 2 R, RBI) and David Morton (1-for-1, RBI) also added hits for Xavier.

· Matt Kent got the start and went two innings, leaving with the lead in the third.
· Brad Kirschner (5-2) came on in relief, tossing two innings and allowing three earned runs.
· Trey Schramm was brilliant in relief, going four straight scoreless innings before allowing three runs in the ninth. The freshman righty picked up his second career save with the effort.
· The ninth inning runs snapped a personal 21 inning scoreless streak for Schramm, who has allowed just three runs in 15 innings during BIG EAST play.

FIRST INNING:Â Rylan Bannon led off the game with a hit by pitch, advancing to second a wild one before getting out on a fielder's choice. With Dan Rizzie aboard, Joe Gellenbeck singled through the right side to put runners on the corners. Andre Jernigan then connected for a double into the left field corner to score Rizzie and make it 3-1.Â
SECOND INNING:Â Will LaRue led off the frame with a single up the middle before stealing second and third base. Matt Fallon would bat next, lofting a fly ball to center field to get Xavier back within a run. After a Rylan Bannon walk, Dan Rizzie blasted a homer to left to give XU a 4-3 lead.
THIRD INNING:Â Nate Soria singled and stole second with one out. After swiping second, the sophomore took off for third and came home after Villanova's catcher, Brandon Campos, sailed the throw high to third.
FOURTH INNING:Â Rylan Bannon walked and stole second to open the frame, coming around to score on a single by Dan Rizzie and a misplayed ball by Villanova right fielder, Donovan May. Batting next, Joe Gellenbeck cracked a single to right to bring Rizzie around. Chris Givin then doubled to center with two outs to make it 8-4.
FIFTH INNING:Â Ethan Schmidt walked and stole second, coming around to score with one out on a two-run bomb to left center by Rylan Bannon.
EIGHTH INNING:Â Dan Rizzie walked to lead off the inning, moving to third on a single by Joe Gellenbeck. Andre Jernigan then worked a walk to load the bases. Back-to-back plunkings of Nate Soria and Chris Givin resulted in two more runs, and Ethan Schmidt worked a one out walk to make it 13-7. David Morton followed with a single through the right side, scoring Soria. Sam Flamini then worked a bases loaded walk to cap the scoring and make it 15-7.
