Doss, Lankford score for the Musketeers in 2-0 win
RICHMOND, Ky. - Xavier women's soccer moved to 2-0 on Sunday after topping Eastern Kentucky University, 2-0, on the road. The back-to-back wins to start the season marks the first time the Musketeers have started the season 2-0 since 2013.
Â
Tori Doss knocked in the first goal of her senior season, and 10th of her career, in the 18th minute. Samantha Dewey set up the play for what would be the game winner, passing to Maddie Tierney. Tierney crossed to Doss who buried the ball in the right corner of the net.
The Musketeers pressed for the insurance goal in the second half, finishing with 14 shots, including taking six shots on goal to just three for the Colonels.
Xavier broke through in the second half, adding to the lead in the 69th minute when freshman Courtney Lankford scored her first collegiate goal. Emily Calvani crossed to set up Lankford who finished from four yards out to put Xavier up 2-0.
Doss, matched by Dewey, finished with a team high five shots, with the senior forward getting a game-high three attempts on the goal.
Â
Senior Rachel Piccus played full time in goal, finishing with a clean sheet for the second straight game. The win marks the 12th of Piccus' career, with nine of those coming as complete-game shutouts.
Piccus collected three saves on the game after Xavier's defense limited the number of good looks the Colonels had at the net. Tierney, Ellie Eckerle, Courtney Kobashigawa and Kennedy Rose played a majority of the game in the backfield for the Musketeers, with Tierney clocking the full 90 minutes.
Â
"Give Eastern Kentucky a lot of credit today, they executed their game plan well. They put 11 players behind the ball and were very challenging to break down. What I like about today is that we got a result on the road after a tough Friday night with a quick turnaround, but we should have been up 4-0 at halftime. Our forwards and attacking midfielders need to do a better job finishing the really good chances that we create for them."
Â
The Musketeers are back in action on Friday, August 26 when Xavier travels to Ball State for the second game of a four-game road swing. The Musketeers and the Cardinals are set for a 5:00 p.m. ET first touch.
